BIG FINISH’S DOCTOR WHO-The Ninth Doctor Adventures: SNARE
BIG FINISH’S DOCTOR WHO-The Ninth Doctor Adventures: SNARE
There’s a reason I haven’t reviewed many or any BIG FINISH
audios. It’s not that they’re bad but they’ve become a bit routine. I like the
Tom Baker ones and the McCoy ones are rarely if ever bad (just one in all these
years was bad). Yet, the Disney shit has put me off ALL Doctor Who really. Yet…
…when you have a GREAT Doctor, a GREAT companion, and Jackie
Tyler and the actress, Camille who portrays her, and a reasonably unique and
wonderful plot by a good writer, you have REALLY great DOCTOR WHO.
First, both Rose and Jackie are, like Adric in the classic
series, really real and are “us” and are very relatable as real people in
unreal situations. Adric talked like a real teen boy. Jackie talks like a real
mom and she is both dramatic and hilarious, sometimes at the same time. She’s
also loyal and heroic at the right times and yet here she gets the sonic even
while worrying about tea, her radio which the Doctor converted for her and
caring for Kevin (who may or may not be gay). She’s just the epitome of a great
character.
The rapport evident between Piper, Camille and Chris is
still there and never went away. When you have DW with them, it’s real, it’s
serious, and yet it is also funny, flippant, fantastic and just on target. DW
hasn’t been this way since MIDNIGHT. Moffat sucks. Chibnall sucks. RTD2 got
sucky over time. THIS is Doctor Who.
Tim’s a good writer, at least here. He fully captures the
aliens in the cupboard feel of DW while also bringing it down to Earth and
grounding it in humanity and emotions, the perfect balance, and that balance is
captured in the Ninth Doctor who does things in proper style based on all that’s
gone before and all that moves forward as a likable, yet flawed battle weary
Doctor. This SNARE was perfect and gives me hope that SOMEONE somewhere can
write and execute GREAT Doctor Who again. Well done all around.
