DARK SHADOWS 504
DARK SHADOWS 504
“I can’t stop thinking about
Adam. There’s something so odd about him.”
“Vicki, I’m going to tell you
something that I haven’t told anyone. But you must promise not to let it go any
farther.”
“Cassandra has a talent for
making everyone feel guilty.”
“I don’t know why. I just don’t
trust her. I don’t trust her at all.”
Vicki does the narration.
We haven’t seen Vicki since
ep 490!
Vicki and Liz wait. It seems
to be day time. There is a horse statue near the phone in the Collinwood
drawing room. Carolyn voice over.
Liz, with her usual positive-ness,
states that Carolyn is dead or soon will be. Vicki says no. The sheriff calls
and they have the man and “they don’t know” where Carolyn is.
There is a strange shot of
the drawing room as they move about it and we see a strange corner/wall. It
seems to be the window. Liz hopes they release the man so he can lead them to
Carolyn.
Carolyn recalls things
verbally out loud but then it switches to voice over. She cries and the cries
continue into the next scene. Adam is chained and in jail. When Liz and Vicki
arrive, we see…what’s with this jail? It looks little like the sheriff’s office
of the first year of DS.
For one, the back wall looks
like…some kind of curtain or some kind of wooden log cabin!? In addition, the
jail looks barren. A sadistic guard tells the women that he’s had to rough the
man (ADAM) up to keep him in line and calm. The guard teases him. Liz tells him
the sight of the guard upsets the man and she orders him to put his gun away,
which he keeps waving at Adam, who seems to know what it can do.
The guard says, “You give a
lot of orders.”
“Yes I do!” She snaps.
She wants him out of Adam’s
line of sight so he does not get upset. She has to threaten him to get him to
do so, telling him that the Sheriff listens to what she has to say. “Do as I
say, now.” The guard complies.
Liz calls the man Adam and he
seems to know her and she tries to get him to trust them both. Vicki and Liz
question Adam, who mentions “friend”, meaning Carolyn. He also says the word
food. Vicki gets an IDK.
The women realize he cannot
talk much. Adam wants to help them but can’t. They leave. WHY didn’t one of
them think of showing him a photograph of Carolyn?
Carolyn voice over again. It
has been hours and she is stuck in the deserted cellar of a burned out old
house. Well, that explains what a root cellar is, I suppose.
At Collinwood, Vicki can’t
stop thinking about Adam. He is like a
young child. Liz will tell her something she’s never told anyone! THIS IS IT! LIZ’S
GOING TO TELL VICKI IS THAT SHE IS HER MOTHER and VICKI IS HER DAUGHTER TOO,
RIGHT? Nope.
She tells Vicki she thinks
Barnabas is connected with Adam and she mentions the OTHER DAY there was that
note Barnabas sent her about a young NEPHEW (should have been cousin) named
Adam Collins. This is the name Willie spoke to her and tried to deny he said.
They were supposed to treat him like one of the family. The other day means
some time in episodes around the 480s and/or the 490s!
Liz says, “I don’t know. I
don’t know anything. I only know…”
Outside, in the hallway,
Cassandra (in a stunning red dress) listens.
WE HEAR SOMEONE STAPLING
SOMETHING. Cassandra opens the doors. “I didn’t know you’d returned.” Was Vicki gone? Or did Cassandra mean back
from her trip from the jail?
Liz is supposed to go up to
rest. Mrs. Johnson told Cassandra about what happened to Carolyn.
Cassandra mentions about
Adam, “Roger tells me he’s an extraordinarily huge man.”
Vicki says, “He is.”
Cassandra is interested and
Vicki wants to know why. She’s suspicious. Cassandra mentions that Vicki is not
one of the family.
Cassandra calls Vicki hostile
and states that Vicki has been hostile to her since Cassandra arrived. She
wants to know why. She asks if she
resembles someone. She starts to cry and exits the room, “Oh, what’s the
use!” She runs up the steps but then
stops her whole tantrum to smile as her facade.
Is Angelique aka Cassandra
coming from a place of truth here, “I’m only a woman who loves her husband and
wants to be accepted by the family.”? If
she is, she means Barnabas and the 1795 family and not Roger. She then stops on
the steps and smiles with that evil smile so no, she’s not coming from a true
place at all.
The grandfather clock looks
different. Liz comes down for coffee. Vicki wonders if she’s misjudged
Cassandra and feels sorry or guilty. Liz tells Vicki that Cassandra has a
talent for making people—everyone-- feel guilty and sorry. Vicki has fallen for
Cassandra’s lies and that fake act she put on.
Liz says, “I don’t trust her”
and she can’t tell Vicki why, she doesn’t know herself, “I don’t know why. I
don’t trust her at all.”
In the jail, the guard
continues to taunt Adam. He even opens the door and takes out a night stick to
beat Adam. Is he crazy? The guard mentions Adam’s rich lady friend. Adam beats
the guard down and gets out via the window, bending the bars. A deputy, who is
suspiciously dressed in the same clothes that Patterson usually wears, hears
the commotion and finds the cell this way with the guard on the ground.
Credits: Jail window.
A good episode driven by Joan
and bringing the women back into the fold, including Vicki and Cassandra AND
Carolyn.

Women Running from Houses: Dark Shadows
Episode 504: The Ladykiller | Dark Shadows Every Day
- In Act I, when Victoria says she will go into Collinsport with Elizabeth, there is a banging noise from off-stage.
- In Act I, as Victoria and Elizabeth are leaving the drawing room and stop at the doors, a boom mic or camera shadow moves across the door.
- As Carolyn ponders her situation, the music cue for the next scene with Adam begins to play and then stops suddenly. Then, when the scene shifts from the root cellar to Adam in the jail cell, Carolyn's crying can still be heard when the shot changes to the barred jail windows. Also, at the beginning of that scene in Act I, there is a lot of off-stage shuffling noise.
- When Elizabeth is talking to Adam in the jail in Act II, right before she says, "I'll help you," Joan Bennett glances away at the teleprompter.
- A loud cranking noise can be heard offstage as Cassandra asks if there's been any news of Carolyn.
- In Act III, Elizabeth and Vicki are in the foyer of Collinwood, and Liz tells Vicki she has something to tell her in private. In the background, the door under the stairs opens and closes.
- When Cassandra stands up from a drawing room chair and says to Victoria that she knows she and Roger married suddenly, a camera shadow moves across the back of the chair. There is also a lot of off-stage shuffling noise at this time.
- When Elizabeth and Victoria are talking about Cassandra in Act IV, there is a rattling sound off-stage; it sounds like Adam's chains, so it is likely they were preparing for the next scene in the jail.
- When the deputy is talking to Adam in the final scene, there is a squeaking noise from off-stage.
- When the deputy goes to open Adam's cell, the door starts to open before he has turned the key in the lock.
