GAMEBOYS 2
GAMEBOYS 2
Previously
on Gameboys: Leo Balante of Rank Magazine wrote, "In Gameboys, there are
neither high-octane action, knee-slapping comedy, nor teleserye drama. Neither
does it have fancy camera work, visual effects, nor A-listers as leads. All the
viewers saw are two young men, in and out of video calls, portraying various
levels of onscreen chase, before leading to a denouement that brought viewers
to feel, think, and believe in a new order that is beautiful and
possible."
Which wraps
up season one brilliantly. Says it better than I. For some really unfathomable
reason, they released GAMEBOYS THE MOVIE first (2021) I believe. This is a cut
version of the second season and with an ending that makes one never want to
watch GAMEBOYS again. All I can say is if you are a die hard fan, get it but watch season two
first as the ending is better, the added scenes are better (though they’re not
added; the movie is a recut and edited version of the second season, condensed
to less than two hours; that’s eight full episodes in less than two hours;
shame on them). The movie gives you a false impression of what’s happening.
The ending to
season two is ambiguous in a way but so much more satisfying than the movie
ending. If the second season ended where the movie ended, I’d be screaming for
a third season.
I don’t want
to give anything away but to say that this is a dual romance might not give
much away. Yes, there is Gavreel and Cario’s love/romance but this time they’re
spending time together and it happens to be more time than they thought they
had. There are issues, though.
Three of
their friends arrive, one by one and all three are charming, though I must
admit Achilles (Chill for short) is a bit irritating and annoying, making drama
where there should be none and causing all the drama himself but there you go.
There’s also a homophobic aunt and another aunt who is sick.
That’s about
all I can say but the romance is both settling and unsettling, in that they
love each other so much and so warmly, it hurts if they have to part or if they
have quarrels.
Beautifully
shot, wonderfully written, and warmly acted, GAMEBOYS 2 may not be as unique as
season one with its zoom love affair and romance, ending in the first meeting
but this season season is just as good and positive and loving. It all works
and may be superior in many ways.
There is
nothing like GAMEBOYS and GAMEBOYS 2 so I wish it will return with more of
these characters’ stories. I already believe Pearl and Achilles have a spin off
movie (Pearl also has an eight episode series).
DO NOT MISS
THIS.
