ZOEY 101-the pilot WELCOME TO PCA

Zoey 101-pilot -- Welcome to PCA

I suspect that somehow between airing and DVDing and streaming, some of the background music might have changed as it just doesn’t really ring a bell plus while the music is playing, some of the time in this episode, the subtitles read lyrics but no lyrics can be heard, so what’s up with that.

Okay, the theme song is great as in most Nick shows. We meet Zoey, her dad, and her brother Dustin right away as they drive to Pacific Coast Academy and once there, Zoey meets Chase, who falls off his bike into a flag pole. Chase takes her to her room, 101 (and now I know why it’s called the title it is called). Nicole is a hoot and we meet her, too, as well as Zoey’s other room mate, the cranky Dana Cruz. In recent years, I’ve been told the actress who played Nicole was ostracized by the other actors because of controversy which didn’t really seem her fault. That’s a shame and I’m sorry to hear that.

When Zoey wants to join the basketball team, she comes up against Logan, rich (though we do NOT know that yet). Dana steps in to help the girls’ side at least get a respectable lose. It’s realistic that the girls do not win but at least they lost by only a point. Even so the Australian or New Zealand teacher/coach wants to have Dana and Zoey on the team.

Quinn, though we do not formerly meet her, almost steals the show here and I forgot she was in the series from this early episode. I thought, for some reason, she came into it later.

One thing about this show is that it looks expensive. At least the outdoor locations make it different than most other teen shows on Disney or Nick (other than the magnificent SO WEIRD but that’s NOT a sitcom). The show looks colorful and great. I also like the cartoonish segues.

There’s also NO laugh track on this show and that makes almost every scene of laughter even funnier. Though Michael is in this and has a few lines and is part of the basketball game, we don’t formerly meet him yet. He will be a huge part of the show and one of the funniest parts.

As with all Nick shows during this time, this one pushes the envelope a bit more than usual but it is all innocent. When Logan throws a football with a nasty message, Nicole asks Zoey what is on the football by removing the item: a jockstrap. When Zoey whispers to her what it is, she screams. After being a nemesis to Zoey, Logan asks, "Wanna go make out."

Quinn once blew up basketball with chemicals. Her scientific genius is not yet established.

A good start.

The end quote is Quinn saying, “Let’s get this party started, yo.”

Synop: Zoey Brooks (Jamie Lynn Spears) and her younger brother, Dustin (Paul Butcher) start to attend Pacific Coast Academy (PCA), an elite boarding school in California. While there, Zoey meets Chase Matthews (Sean Flynn), a friendly guy with high hopes of getting a girlfriend. Chase leads Zoey to her dorm, where she meets Nicole Bristow (Alexa Nikolas), a savvy girl who is easily attracted to hot boys and Dana Cruz (Kristin Herrera), a tomboy who does not accept diversity. A boy named Logan Reese (Matthew Underwood) challenges the girls to a basketball match. Logan picks his team, which includes Chase and Michael Barrett (Christopher Massey), another friendly guy who is willing to accept a challenge. Zoey chooses her team, which includes Nicole, Dana, and Quinn Pensky (Erin Sanders), a meddlesome scientist who is always inventing wacky items. The girls lose the basketball game by one point, prompting Logan to tease them. The coach of the basketball team then asks Zoey and Dana if they want to join the basketball team because they helped the most. Zoey accepts, while Dana says she will "think about it."
