DARK SHADOWS 638

 DARK SHADOWS 638

“IDK how I’m going to do it but I’m going to find Jeff.”

“I don’t understand you, Chris.”

 “Very few people do.”

“He and Vicki have always been very close, maybe he can help.”

“What are we are gonna do about her?”  Julia “I don’t know.”  “I don’t understand anything that’s happening to her.”

Grayson. Morning. Event which will plunge Victoria Winters and those around her into new terrors. No reprise. And in truth it is old terrors as it will lead them and she into 1795 or 96. Sigh.

Vicki comes in, in shock and passes out. She is found by Liz, who came in to read her mail. Mike shadow. Vicki tells Liz what happened and doesn’t know what she will do. “I didn’t know where else to go.”  Liz says, “I don’t understand.”

Vicki cries. Liz helps her upstairs.

Cottage: Maggie is up, Julia says, “Good afternoon”, and Maggie is told she lost a day. Julia lies to her with a series of lies: Maggie wouldn’t marry Nicholas so he left for Europe, telling them he will never return, most likely Maggie will never see him again and that Maggie fainted when she told Nicholas she would not marry him.

Julia asks, “Are you sorry he’s gone?”   Maggie, “I don’t know.”  Maggie is somehow relieved. She’s glad he’s gone. “IDK why but I am.”

Liz calls there for Julia to come help Vicki. Maggie asks what’s happening to Vicki but Julia says, “IDK but I’ve got to get to Collinwood.”  Julia tells Maggie, who wants to follow Julia.

Vicki wants to find Jeff. “IDK how I’m going to do it but I’m going to find Jeff.”

Vicki is given a sedative by Julia. She asks Julia to call Prof. Stokes. Chris is here to see Julia.

Downstairs, Maggie vs Chris. “I don’t understand you, Chris.”

“Very few people do.”

Julia comes down, Maggie goes up to see Vicki. She’s furious with Chris being heartless (toward Amy).

Chris gives Julia money for Amy. He has to leave after all. We’re not told why but we can assume the dead hotel manager? Is that ever dealt with or told to anyone?

Julia wants him to stay for Amy. He says, “I’m afraid it’s just impossible, Doctor.”

She is angry, lightly hits him as she puts the money back his pocket, and gives him the money back, “She needs you!”

This is as soap opera like DS has not been for a long, long time. It is not because he’s a dead beat but because he’s a werewolf.

Julia goes back up but asks Chris to stay. It is 5:30 pm. Vicki “feels” Jeff is in her room. His hand touches her cheek, she says.

Liz asks Julia, “What are we are gonna do about her?”  Julia “I don’t know.”  “I don’t understand anything that’s happening to her.”  “Neither do I,” Julia says. Some doctor she is.

A call comes for Julia downstairs. Chris is gone.  Julia on the phone says, “Oh no.”  Amy has run away.

Outside, Chris looks at the full moon, in pain and stopped by the pain.

Maggie is with Vicki who wakes up and feels Jeff is in the room. The room is very dark and shadowy.

The door opens by itself, Maggie thinks it the wind. They run into the hallway and the picture goes out of focus for a bit. Maggie’s not much help, urging Vicki to just go back to bed.

They find the watch Vicki gave Jeff on the wedding night. Vicki flubs, “I gave it to him before we were married….after we were married.”

Liz decides to go to the Old House to get Barnabas, “He and Vicki have always been very close, maybe he can help.”  Julia wishes she can go with her but has to stay here in case there is a call from Windcliff. (Pre Cell Phone days though Roger seemed to have a cell phone as discussed by others in another episode).

6:50pm: Liz in the woods encounters a growling animal that we do not see. “No! No!”

The soft music is used in the credits.

Review: It is odd to see Julia, Maggie, Vicki, and Liz all in the same episode. All we needed was Carolyn and this would have been the ladies’ show this time out.

Bennett seems a bit better in this ep but not quite her old self. Having a wolf man/werewolf storyline  was a sure bet.

The only thing is why did it take this long? In a way I am glad it did. Briscoe is not that bad in this ep and nowadays he’s looking better and better than Jeff Clark and his storyline AND Roger Davis. AND Amy. A better episode. This gave some hope as to the future of the show and fresh storylines.

ark Shadows bloopers to watch out for:

Julia scolds Chris, reminding him that he’s Amy’s only living relative. A while back, they established that Tom and Joe were cousins, so that’s one other relative at least.

When Vicki finds Jeff’s watch, she tells Maggie, “I gave it to Jeff last night, before — after we were married!”

Behind the Scenes:

There’s a Raggedy Ann doll in Maggie’s room, which we saw briefly last week at Windcliff.

This episode had the first use of the soon-to-be familiar sound effect of a werewolf growling.

  • Victoria tells Elizabeth that Jeff was "so sure everything would be alright," but actually he was very doubtful; she was the one who had been sure.
  • At the beginning of the scene with Maggie and Julia, Maggie's face is in close-up. She is sleeping. You see the bed shake slightly, apparently someone giving her a cue to wake up. Also, when the scene shifts from Elizabeth and Victoria at Collinwood, you can still hear Victoria crying as the first shot of Julia's face appears on-screen.
  • When Julia and Maggie are talking about Nicholas while Maggie is in bed, when Julia says, "Probably not," someone coughs off-stage.
  • Julia tells Maggie that Nicholas had to leave town on business in Europe and wouldn't be returning to Collinsport. This is also exactly what Nicholas had told Maggie, but there's no way Julia would have known that. So this is either a huge (unconvincing?) coincidence or a continuity error.
  • When the scene shifts to Maggie and Chris in the Collinwood drawing room, they are in the midst of an argument. Maggie is angry with Chris and wonders "how could you do a thing like that?" They never say what she is upset about or what Chris did (I suspect he told her he was leaving Collinsport and Amy?). Perhaps there was a tape edit here and something was cut out--the episode is slightly shorter than most other episodes. [Addendum: I doubt there was a tape edit. There doesn't appear to be. This seems to be a natural dramatic technique. Within a couple of minutes we find out when Chris tells Julia he is leaving.] [This is just not an issue. Chris has very clearly told Maggie he is leaving. The episode leaves not ambiguity about what is going on here.]
  • Julia calls Chris the 'only living relative' of Amy, but it was mentioned earlier that Joe and Tom were cousins (and therefore Chris as well), so Joe is also related (possibly Julia means an immediate family member).
  • When Maggie and Victoria run into the hallway from Victoria's room, the camera is out of focus.
  • Betsy Durkin flubs: "I gave it to him before...after we were married."
