“I don’t care how strange it is to people.”

“Oh, Liz, so many, many things have gone on in this house, so many strange things that have been attributed to the Collinses. For Carolyn’s sake, for David’s –we shouldn’t encourage this kind of reputation.”

“I just can’t figure out people anymore. It’s as though everyone has lost control of his senses, even a sane man like Mr. Barnabas.”

“I don’t know. I hate it here. The dead walk here. We can’t see them but they do, I know it.”

“There are spirits here, watching us, envying us, because they want to live, they hate us because we’re alive.”

“Everyone tells me the sensible thing to do is the crazy thing to do.”

“Mom, something weird has happened down there.”

“Joe Haskell, he was trying to kill Mr. Barnabas.”

“Kill Barnabas?”

“I have to ask you this. Did you try to kill Barnabas Collins?”

The DVDs have a cool new opening. Joan.

October 31^st. Day.

That still of the Old House needs repairing: it’s all yellow or is that supposed to be daybreak or day out? Colorized?

The reprise is very similar and almost the same but not quite.

New dialog after the old stuff but Barnabas’s shots look different. Joe says more now. Mrs. Johnson comes in and screams. She yells at him to stop and when that does not work, she physically tries to pull him off Barnabas. He pushes her away and I think down (?).

She stands there and screams and then yells for help. Joe yells about Barnabas, that is time for this and that “No one knows what he’s really like.” Mrs. Johnson makes one more appeal and it works. Joe stops. He runs out and she calls after him that he cannot get away. Dumb woman.

At Collinwood, Roger and Liz wonder where Mrs. Johnson is. Roger feels things are more civilized over tea. Liz vs Roger. Liz was talking to a contractor that she is considering for her mausoleum. NOTE: Roger seems to have a pull cord to summon Mrs. Johnson. It is in the drawing room and yes, like THE ADDAMS FAMILY have for Lurch.

I’ve never noticed that before?

Roger admits he has a limited understanding of Liz but he is trying to understand more. Liz tells him she does not have fear, that implies a fear of the unknown. She insists she knows what is going to happen.

Roger tells her he is not going to recommend thinking positively (WHY NOT ? It’s the best suggestion on this show anyone is going to get beyond heartfelt prayer for help from God). He admits he cares about what others think: the kinder villager people will think Liz is eccentric if she builds her own mausoleum. The less kind will think she mad.

Roger suggests she build it at the current Eagle Hill mausoleum, it is in disrepair anyway and needs redesigning.

Roger: “Oh, Liz, so many, many things have gone on in this house, so many strange things that have been attributed to the Collinses. For Carolyn’s sake, for David’s –we shouldn’t encourage this kind of reputation.” He tells Liz they should try not to encourage these things for the sake of Carolyn and David. Roger takes Liz to the Eagle Hill cemetery now. They set out…

Mrs. Johnson has her hands all over Barnabas’s face. She gets him to wake up. “Thank God, you’re alive.” she says. She says it is the people you never thought that would go crazy that do: Joe Haskell.

Barnabas flubs, “I must…you must…” He wants her to forget this. When she balks at that, he asks as a favor to him if she would do that. She wants to call Sheriff Patterson. Barnabas forbids her; this is between Joe and himself.

Joe voice over near a tree that shakes when he leans on it.

Roger and Liz in the graveyard. Liz hears sobbing in a few places, one at a time. We don’t really hear it. Roger does not either.

They see a graveyard tomb stone of someone named Jonah Collins…Died June 15^th, 1863, aged 23. Behind the wall of the cemetery there seems to be no set just blackness but it is daytime in the show.

Liz thinks she hears something. Roger tells her they are here to see if the current mausoleum can be changed to suit her specifications. She says she changed her mind and he asks her why. She says, “I don’t know. I hate it here. The dead walk here. We can’t see them but they do, I know it.”

Liz talks about how the dead walk here, the dead are watching us, and the dead envy us/them and hate them for being alive. We see the inner mausoleum from outside the set, not sure that ever happened before. They go in and hear something.

Joe falls at their feet, having been in the mausoleum.

Mrs. Johnson goes to Harry. First she asks “What are you doing in the front of the house?”

Then, upset, she says, “I just can’t figure out people anymore. It’s as though everyone has lost control of his senses, even a sane man like Mr. Barnabas.”

When Harry asks her about what happened there, she questions him instead, feeling he knows more about this. She starts calling Sheriff Patterson but he stops her. Harry gets in his own IDK. She knows he is lying to her. He makes her hang up and lies to her but asks her to believe him, that he didn’t do anything wrong.

Mrs. Johnson gets her own IDK what to believe.

“Everyone tells me the sensible thing to do is the crazy thing to do,” she complains.

Liz and Roger bring Joe in to Harry and his mother. Mrs. Johnson tells them what happened. She calls Roger Mister Roger. When they seem not to believe her, Mrs. Johnson gets the groggy Joe to admit the truth. Roger calls the police.

The credits are wibbly wobbly.

Dark Shadows bloopers to watch out for:

Mrs. Johnson tells Harry, “You keep out of this! Mr. Roger and Mrs. Stoddard are here, and they’ll do what’s right!”

As the credits begin, someone starts to walk onscreen at the right, but quickly realizes his mistake, and steps back out of the shot.

Behind the Scenes:

In the graveyard, Liz and Roger look at a tombstone, which says, “In memory of Jonah Collins who died June 15th 1863, Aged 23”. That means the baby was born sometime between June 16, 1839 and June 15, 1840. We’ll be visiting 1840 a couple years from now, and we’ll see the events of September 1840 through January 1841. It’s possible that Gabriel and Edith had a baby named Jonah that we don’t hear about; they hardly speak about their children at all. Maybe he was always taking a nap while his parents ran around and acted like lunatics.
