THE X FILES season four and five plus FIGHT THE FUTURE (the first movie)

74          1             "Herrenvolk"‡ R. W. Goodwin              Chris Carter    October 4, 1996           4X01    21.11[21]

Pursued by an Alien Bounty Hunter, Jeremiah Smith takes Mulder to a farm where he finds several girls who are clones of his sister.

Better than I remember but all the mythology storylines about the conspiracy…feel…sort of a cheat as they almost don’t reveal much. Here, we get something and I do like Roy Thinnus. He’s playing Jeremiah Smith, a name from LOST IN SPACE. We know Carter was an Irwin Allen fan (he even shows a bit of LAND OF THE GIANTS-THE MECHANICAL MAN in MILLENNIUM-WEEDS). The Hunter is unrelentless and scary. Maybe too Terminator but effective. The clones are freaky. They don’t seem to talk other than the girl Samantha or did she not talk? It’s so long ago, now (I’m in the middle of season six!).

75          2             "Home"              Kim Manners  Glen Morgan & James Wong October 11, 1996        4X03                18.85[21]

In a small, otherwise peaceful town, the agents investigate the death of an infant with disturbing birth defects, and the trail leads to a clan of inbred, genetic mutants.

Disgusting, gross, depressing and…brilliant. Pushes the boundaries and got me into the X FILES, along with a big boost from MILLENNIUM and FX promoting all of it. Rumored to have almost had a sequel on MILL as the mom and one of her sons get away in the end. Freakish use of popular old time songs.

76          3             "Teliko"               James Charleston       Howard Gordon            October 18, 1996        4X04                18.01[21]

Mulder and Scully are called in to investigate the unexplained deaths of several African and African-American people whose skin color has turned white as the result of either a rare medical disorder or a bizarre curse.

Not as bad as everyone claimed and showing people are multi-deep and capable of good and bad, no matter what race they belong to.

77          4             "Unruhe"           Rob Bowman Vince Gilligan October 27, 1996        4X02    19.10[21]

Agents Mulder and Scully investigate a group of bizarre kidnappings in which the only clues are inexplicable photographs. But when Scully is the next intended victim, Mulder must get into the killer's head.

Can’t remember a single thing about this one. I liked it.

78          5             "The Field Where I Died"         Rob Bowman Glen Morgan & James Wong November 3, 1996                4X05    19.85[21]

FBI Agent Mulder's search for an informant inside a cult compound leads Scully and him to one of the cult leader's wives. What they soon discover is an unexpectedly close connection with the woman.

Really good and deeper than first thought. Good acting even though the guest star is not my favorite actress. She does a great job here. I like her in this.

79          6             "Sanguinarium"           Kim Manners  Valerie Mayhew & Vivian Mayhew     November 10, 1996    4X06    18.85[21]

Bizarre homicides in a hospital's plastic surgery unit lead Mulder and Scully to suspect a supernatural force may be responsible.

Pretty gruesome and explicit boundary pushing X FILES. Not sure it’s worth it here but medical horror is always scary and a notch above things.

Like many episodes this one feels like an Italian Giallo, but this one more than the others.

80          7             "Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man"‡      James Wong   Glen Morgan  November 17, 1996    4X07    17.09[21]

Mulder, Scully and Byers meet with Frohike, where he details what may have been Cigarette Smoking Man's real life.

Avoided this one, thought it would be boring but it was not. It really gives depth to the evil man known as the CSM. Brilliant performances and scary that he could knock off the LoneGunmen at any time. Mulder too apparently.

81          8             "Tunguska"‡   Kim Manners  Frank Spotnitz & Chris Carter              November 24, 1996   4X09                18.85[21]

A diplomatic courier carrying deadly cargo involves Agents Mulder and Scully in a dangerous web of intrigue, which leads Mulder on a trip to Russia.

Thought the whole Russia thing would bore me but it really was not that bad. Disturbing stuff though.

82          9             "Terma"‡            Rob Bowman Frank Spotnitz & Chris Carter              December 1, 1996     4X10                17.34[21]

Scully and Skinner attend a suspicious Senate hearing, while Mulder and Krycek face off in a Russian gulag.

Can’t remember much but I liked it, even though I avoided this two parter for a bit.

83          10          "Paper Hearts"               Rob Bowman Vince Gilligan December 15, 1996  4X08    16.59[21]

Agent Mulder is haunted by an old case in which young girls were killed and hearts cut from their nightgowns. Soon Mulder becomes suspicious when the killer taunts him with the idea that one of his victims may have been Samantha.

Fantastic. Loved this and loved that Mulder kills the guy in the end. Another Samantha story.

84          11          "El Mundo Gira"            Tucker Gates  John Shiban    January 12, 1997         4X11    22.37[21]

Deadly rain in a migrant workers camp sends Agent Mulder and Scully on the trail of a mythical beast—El Chupacabra.

This had a strange and unsettling ending but it’s not as bad as everyone thinks. I like the guest cast even though both brothers are idiots and selfish until….they turn into monsters. THEN, they don’t want to kill each other. Weird and disturbing. I guess the message is no one notices migrants until…they do?

85          12          "Leonard Betts"            Kim Manners  Vince Gilligan & John Shiban & Frank Spotnitz                January 26, 1997         4X14    29.15[21]

The disappearance of a man's body from a hospital morgue leads Mulder and Scully to investigate the strange circumstances surrounding the man's death. However, for Scully it will lead to a horrifying revelation.

Really good but disturbing villain and episode. Scully’s cancer storyline felt unnecessary but I can tell why they did it. Gillian is quite great as a vulnerable Scully, too. This felt, at the time, too sad to watch. It still does in many ways but her whole cancer storyline, I braved through and it does really work. The man playing Betts is really very good, too. Too bad he has to kill to eat someone’s cancer.

86          13          "Never Again" Rob Bowman Glen Morgan & James Wong February 2, 1997         4X13                21.36[21]

On a solo assignment out of town, Scully meets a man whose tattoo does not want to share him—especially not with Scully.

Thought this had more of a climax than it did and was a bit of a let down. Love the guest actor and the Jodie Foster voice. I always worry about the animal pets of the victims. Who will take care of them?

87          14          "Memento Mori"‡        Rob Bowman Chris Carter & Vince Gilligan & John Shiban & Frank Spotnitz             February 9, 1997         4X15    19.10[21]

Fear for Scully's health sends Mulder to investigate the bizarre circumstances that may explain her mysterious abduction two years ago, while Scully takes a more practical course to quell her illness.

Can’t remember much but that this time, I liked it. Is this the one with the alien abductees? Veronica Cartwright may or may not appear here. I really like her. Scully’s meeting with the group is interesting and touching.

88          15          "Kaddish"         Kim Manners  Howard Gordon            February 16, 1997      4X12    16.56[21]

A homicide in a Jewish community leads to the deaths of the killers, forcing Mulder and Scully to determine whether vengeance or larger forces are at work.

The Golem episode. Sensationalism and …it so works. Didn’t see the real villain coming.

89          16          "Unrequited"  Michael Lange               Story by: Howard Gordon

Teleplay by: Howard Gordon & Chris Carter              February 23, 1997      4X16    16.56[21]

The mysterious assassination of a high-ranking military official has Mulder and Scully racing against the clock to stop a seemingly unstoppable—and invisible—assassin.

Liked this one a lot but can’t remember much about it other than the climatic ending where the parade ends with a killing. Too bad the victims sometimes do not listen to Mulder and Scully. Scully is a tough one in this.

90          17          "Tempus Fugit"‡           Rob Bowman Chris Carter & Frank Spotnitz              March 16, 1997                4X17    18.85[21]

While celebrating Scully's birthday, Mulder learns of Max Fenig's death in a plane crash. What the agents soon discover is that the circumstances surrounding the crash may have been alien.

Really involving and good. Realistic.

91          18          "Max"‡ Kim Manners  Chris Carter & Frank Spotnitz              March 23, 1997            4X18                18.34[21]

The investigation continues for agents Mulder and Scully of the apparent downing of Flight 549 by a UFO. They encounter deadly opposition from the military, which continues to cover up the truth of incident.

Can’t remember much.

92          19          "Synchrony"    James Charleston       Howard Gordon & David Greenwalt                April 13, 1997    4X19    18.09[21]

Mulder and Scully investigate a homicide for which the suspect presents an incredible alibi — that the death was foretold by an old man able to see into the future.

Liked it?

93          20          "Small Potatoes"          Cliff Bole           Vince Gilligan April 20, 1997 4X20    20.86[21]

A small town is "blessed" by babies being born with tails. Mulder and Scully arrive only to encounter a suspect who proves nearly impossible to identify.

Remember nothing but that I liked it.

94          21          "Zero Sum"‡    Kim Manners  Howard Gordon & Frank Spotnitz     April 27, 1997 4X21                18.60[21]

Agent Mulder launches a criminal investigation into a bizarre death which he finds has connections to A.D. Skinner. Meanwhile, Skinner makes his own deal with the devil in a desperate attempt to save Scully from the cancer that is taking over her body.

Love when Skinner helps the agents. The deaths of a teacher AND  a very young boy, both trying to help others, by the virus carried by the bees,  are both quite disturbing.

95          22          "Elegy"                James Charleston       John Shiban    May 4, 1997    4X22    17.10[21]

Mulder and Scully track a series of homicides that lead to a home for the mentally ill and a clue that makes no sense: each victim had a purported warning from the dead. However, while Mulder makes some surprising discoveries, Scully is reminded of her own mortality.

Great idea and that a mentally challenged man may be the culprit (he isn’t but…). Engrossing and well played.

96          23          "Demons"‡      Kim Manners  R. W. Goodwin              May 11, 1997 4X23    19.10[21]

Scully is concerned for Mulder's well-being when he suffers from a memory loss while investigating a case — and is the only suspect in a brutal double homicide.

Not sure about this one. It is disturbing. Reminded me of a MIAMI VICE ep where Crockett tries to get into the head of a serial killer. Never trust the old guy mentors.

97          24          "Gethsemane"‡            R. W. Goodwin              Chris Carter    May 18, 1997 4X24    19.85[21]

Researchers in northern Canada discover what may finally be irrefutable proof of alien existence, Mulder believes in the discovery but an FBI syndicate assassin tries to kill Scully then tries to convince Mulder that alien existence is a cover though sinister agents begin to kill to prevent its revelation, leading to a shocking conclusion.

Is this the one where Melissa dies?

1             "Redux"‡           R. W. Goodwin              Chris Carter    November 2, 1997      5X02    27.34[22]

Scully helps Mulder fake his death, but comes under intense scrutiny; Skinner is suspected as the traitor inside the FBI; and Mulder breaks into the Department of Defense in a desperate bid to save Scully, but while doing so he finds himself facing the truth about the aliens he has been chasing.

Well done.

99          2             "Redux II"‡        Kim Manners  Chris Carter    November 9, 1997      5X03    24.84[22]

While Scully lies on her deathbed; Cigarette Smoking Man makes an important decision in helping Mulder. But even as events come to a climax, Mulder finds his belief in his crusade has all but collapsed.

Can’t remember much but Scully is saved?

100       3             "Unusual Suspects"   Kim Manners  Vince Gilligan November 16, 1997   5X01    21.72[22]

The origins of the Lone Gunmen are explored. In 1989, two salesmen and a federal employee join forces when they meet Susanne Modeski, a woman who claims that she is being pursued by her violent ex-boyfriend, an FBI agent named Fox Mulder. We learn how agent Mulder came to meet three friendly and familiar faces.

Never was a big Lone Gunman fan other than their few comedic turns but this was better than I expected. Funny, too in places.

101       4             "Detour"            Brett Dowler   Frank Spotnitz               November 23, 1997   5X04    22.88[22]

On the way to an FBI convention in Florida, Mulder and Scully stop to help in the investigation of the mysterious disappearance of three people in the woods, where a pair of invisible humanoids lurk.

Loved this one but found, despite the various humorous dialog moments and the entire situation, this one was left open ended, too. Does the family have more run ins with the animal people in future? I felt this just ended and needed more.

102       5             "The Post-Modern Prometheus"        Chris Carter    Chris Carter    November 30, 1997   5X06                18.68[22]

Filmed in black-and-white, Mulder and Scully investigate a letter from a single mother that leads them to a small town where a modern-day version of Frankenstein's monster lurks, Jerry Springer is an obsession, and Cher plays a significant part.

Despite the “monster” raping women, essentially, not that back then it was that prevalent or noticeable as he was sympathetic and at times, the women seemed to want it (?) maybe? Maybe afterward? Not that bad but a bit slow in pace and I love the concert scene at the end. I just wish they used another Cher song, “Do you believe in love?”  I think that would fit the Mulder/Scully romance or lack thereof.

103       6             "Christmas Carol"‡    Peter Markle   Vince Gilligan & John Shiban & Frank Spotnitz                December 7, 1997     5X05    20.91[22]

Home for the holidays, Scully is haunted by dreams which hint at a strange connection to a dead woman's daughter.

Morose, morbid, and not my thing but watchable. I found the entire Emily thing a bit of a slowly paced bore but realize the drama of it. Emily’s not a particularly charming child or have a personality at all so it’s hard to really sympathize.

104       7             "Emily"‡             Kim Manners  Vince Gilligan & John Shiban & Frank Spotnitz         December 14, 1997            5X07    20.94[22]

Scully fights to protect her daughter's life, while Mulder discovers her true origins.

Is Emily really dead?

105       8             "Kitsunegari"  Daniel Sackheim         Vince Gilligan & Tim Minear  January 4, 1998            5X08                19.75[22]

When 'Pusher' Modell escapes from prison, Mulder and Scully race to catch him before he can take revenge against his favorite target – Agent Mulder.

Wonderful. Love the actress who plays his sister. Completely great way to bring back a former villain.

106       9             "Schizogeny"  Ralph Hemecker          Jessica Scott & Mike Wollaeger          January 11, 1998                5X09    21.37[22]

When a teenager is suspected of murdering his stepfather, Mulder and Scully become convinced that a greater evil may be lurking in the community.

The first one I remember watching fully and at the time I thought, “MEH,” but I really liked this on the rewatch.

107       10          "Chinga"           Kim Manners  Stephen King & Chris Carter February 8, 1998         5X10                21.33[22]

Scully takes a vacation to Maine, where she encounters a bizarre case where the victims appear to have inflicted wounds upon themselves – apparently at the behest of a strange young girl.

Beautiful looking but I’m not a big Stephen King fan and think he rips off a lot of older TV shows and movies from the past and gets away with it. Even so, the doll things is hard to get wrong even if it is cliched and this works. The location shooting is beautiful and the jokes from Mulder and Scully’s reactions are wonderful. I love their rapport, that is what makes the entire series tbh. Is this the one where Scully eats a chocolate out of the box after a store fight?

108       11          "Kill Switch"    Rob Bowman William Gibson & Tom Maddox          February 15, 1998      5X11                18.04[22]

While investigating the strange circumstances of the death of a reclusive computer genius rumored to have been researching artificial intelligence, Mulder and Scully become targets of an unlikely killer capable of the worst kind of torture.

Another good one.

109       12          "Bad Blood"    Cliff Bole           Vince Gilligan February 22, 1998      5X12    19.25[22]

While investigating bizarre exsanguinations in Texas, Mulder kills a teenage boy whom he "mistakes" for a vampire. Awaiting a meeting with Skinner, Mulder and Scully attempt to get their stories "straight" by relating to each other their differing versions of what happened during their investigation.

Fantastic and utterly hilarious. It was so when ALL IN THE FAMILY did it years before this. Still, this episode works on many levels: comedy, horror, character study.

110       13          "Patient X"‡     Kim Manners  Chris Carter & Frank Spotnitz              March 1, 1998               5X13                20.21[22]

Scully forms a bond with Cassandra Spender, a woman who claims to have been abducted by aliens. While Mulder's disbelief in the alien conspiracy is now questioned, he finds himself with more personal threats at the FBI.

Really enjoying the Cassandra storyline more than the first time round.

111       14          "The Red and the Black"‡       Chris Carter    Chris Carter & Frank Spotnitz              March 8, 1998    5X14    19.98[22]

With Cassandra Spender missing, and her son Jeffrey angrily attempting to push his way up in the FBI, Mulder has Scully put under hypnosis to learn the truth. The Syndicate, meanwhile, quicken their tests for the alien vaccine, sacrificing their own to do so.

Jeff: hard to tell what they wanted out of this character. And now that I’ve reached past his death, I guess it was to redeem him or compare him to Mulder, which seems unfair. The actor is a good one and I like him in a more sympathetic context as in MILLENNIUM’s episode MONSTER I think it was called as the father of a kid abused by another kid.

112       15          "Travelers"        William A. Graham     John Shiban & Frank Spotnitz              March 29, 1998                5X15    15.06[22]

In 1990, a bizarre murder leads young agent Fox Mulder to question a former FBI Agent who investigated one of the first X-Files dating back to the 1950s – a case which may have involved Mulder's father.

Love Darren McGavin but Meh. This was just okay. Gross spiders out of the mouth.

113       16          "Mind's Eye"    Kim Manners  Tim Minear       April 19, 1998 5X16    16.53[22]

Agents Mulder and Scully investigate a murder that seems to have been committed by a blind woman, but Mulder suspects that her involvement is not what it seems.

Utterly fantastic. Great performances. This should have won an Emmy. Totally great guest cast. Almost like a MILL ep.

this one also has aspects of Giallo but also has more heart.

114       17          "All Souls"         Allen Coulter  Story by: Billy Brown & Dan Angel

Teleplay by: Frank Spotnitz & John Shiban April 26, 1998 5X17    13.44[22]

The unexplained death of a young handicapped girl prompts Father McCue to ask Scully for her help, but her investigation leads her to a mystery she's afraid to understand.

Can’t recall a thing about this other than it felt very MILLENNIUM and disturbing.

115       18          "The Pine Bluff Variant"           Rob Bowman John Shiban    May 3, 1998    5X18    18.24[22]

Scully begins to grow suspicious of Mulder, whose increasingly strange behavior suggests he may be serving another agenda.

Cannot remember a thing other than I loved it?

116       19          "Folie à Deux" Kim Manners  Vince Gilligan May 10, 1998 5X19    17.63[22]

Mulder and Scully encounter a delusional man who believes his boss may be a monster – and is willing to pay any price to prove it.

Creepy paranoia that this show does so well and this works, especially at there is an unfocused shot of the villain crawling like a roach on the ceiling behind Mulder. Just wonderful. Good horror story and again, open ended. The villains get away a lot in this show.

117       20          "The End"‡       R. W. Goodwin              Chris Carter    May 17, 1998 5X20    18.76[22]

Investigating the murder of a chess player, Mulder and Scully meet a boy who may be the embodiment of everything in the X-Files. This episode marks the first appearance of Diana Fowley.

The Gibson Praise stuff confounds me. I like a lot of it and the premise is wonderful but why not hunt for him more when he vanishes again and again. I like the actor, too, but feel maybe another actor might have done more with it. Still, maybe Gibson is supposed to feel a bit dull? I also don’t recall what his background is. Does he have parents? Do we see them?

THE MOVIE; FIGHT THE FUTURE

Despite dreading this one, I saw a video expounding its merits and honestly: the man in the video was right: this movie is a lot of entertaining fun. It has its flaws of course: like how did Scully get out of the morgue where she was not supposed to be and found clues to the conspiracy? How did a bee stay with her that long and not sting her? And a lot more but with a wonderful cast (even the kid from AMERICAN GOTHIC), the death of a major character (Well Manicured Man) and a wonderful Martin Landau in this (he seems to die, too, though we never see his body), this works. It feels epic, too, as it moves from one place to another and Scully still being a skeptic after this might see ludicrous. She said she saw the craft take off over them. Lots of action, good music, and conspiracy bullshit but SOME answers. Really liked it.
