THE GET OF BELIAL (published 2002)

Date of publication: 2002

Time frame: after TV show’s last episode

Kolchak is investigating a miners’ strike in Winship County, West Virginia when he learns of a series of horrific deaths; he learns that the bodies of the victims appear to have been mutilated either by angry miners using picks, or by savage, wild animals. EVE OF TERROR

Date of publication: 2005

Time frame: after TV show’s last episode and probably the Get of Belial

As Doctor Myra Deckbar and her technician, Wayne Franks, carry out an important experiment into sound waves, Myra suddenly finds herself cast as the guinea pig, and is assaulted by deafening audio waves. When Franks is subsequently found murdered Kolchak joins the police investigation team to uncover the truth behind the events. Together with Myra’s gorgeous roommate, Gwen, the reporter soon uncovers a sickening governmental cover-up that dates back seventy years – which has somehow led to Myra’s transformation into a brutal killing machine…

THE EXECUTIONERS-unmade script

The Executioners’ was written by Max Hodge, although it is not known if this script was ever considered for production. It’s a great story: three murders occur in one day, the victims found strangled, beheaded and hanged. Investigating the story, Kolchak discovers that the deaths are linked to ‘The Executioners’, a Seventeenth-Century Dutch painting depicting a hangman, an axe-wielding executioner, and a poison-carrying monk. The artist was the notorious Henry Boetje, who once murdered a dozen victims, incinerated them and then mixed their ashes in with his paint; he also used their blood to clean his brushes. When Kolchak notes that the figures in the painting have moved from one night to the next, he realises that the subjects of the painting are coming to life to carry out the grisly murders…

KOLCHAK: TALES OF THE NIGHT STALKER issue 1

Date of publication: 2003

Story: Shady Places (another part of the inside front cover says there is a separate sequence called “Mr. Nightmare story”?).

Where now?: New Orleans?

Carl faces a swamp monster. A woman is attacked in an alley. Did they really need to have her cat killed, too? The thing is a shadow that eats meat (this sounds a lot like one of the better FREAKLINKS episodes). The thing struck in August 3rd, 1906. Kolchak gets infected and turning into a plant man. He has another victim in his closet in his motel room. Sleep and the AC and being out of sunlight stops the infection which is caused by a company using chemicals. I have to admit I don’t fully get this story and haven’t spent enough time to reread it or decipher it.

Kolchak arrives in New Orleans to investigate claims that Crescent City Development has violated EPA codes, disposing of hazardous chemicals used in its new line of fertilisers and pesticides and conducting illegal experiments. While following up reports of a human plant terrorizing the local citizens Kolchak is attacked by the creature, but manages to trap it in the closet of his hotel room; however, he soon becomes disturbed when his body actually begins growing leaves. Meanwhile, reports come in of a second monster roaming the streets: a living shadow that can strip the flesh from its victims’ bones in an instant…

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER: DEVIL IN THE DETAILS

Date of publication: 2003

Kolchak investigates the disappearance of businessman Chester Fredersen, who has apparently embezzled his company's profits and then run off, leaving his brother and business partner, Barry, in hospital dying of Lou Gherig's Disease. Before he vanished, Chester called his wife from work at the Byte-by-Byte corporation, screaming that he was literally being eaten away. After Diana Fredersen also dissolves into nothing while on a date with Kolchak, Barry's condition goes into an impossible state of remission. Kolchak beleives that the key lies in a bottle of impossibly-small robots...

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER: PAIN MOST HUMAN

Date of publication: 2004

Tired of covering stories that involve monsters and demons, Kolchak asks Tony for a simpler, more normal assignment. His editor sends him to Camerton, N.Y., to find out just what it was that fell out of the sky a few weeks ago; although initial reports stated that the object was a crashed U.F.O., the story was subsequently retracted by the nearby army base, which then issued an announcement that one of their experimental jet planes had crashed. With the diverting assistance of local waitress Kathy Phlinsen, Carl’s investigations lead him to check out the nearby Lupoff Foundation, a factory complex that manufactures hi-tech computer chips. That night, Kolchak decides to sneak into the army base, only to discover that visitors from outer space are not the real monsters in this case…

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER: PAIN WITHOUT TEARS

Date of publication: 2004

Depressed at how his life has become nothing but a succession of frightening encounters with vampires, werewolves and energy beasts, and faced with the prospect of yet more grisly death and horror, reporter Carl Kolchak heads for a bar and proceeds to drink himself into oblivion. During his liquid breakfast, Carl encounters a young Chinese girl, Yitt Feng, who encourages him to unburden his troubles on her; after pouring out his life story to the attentive and sympathetic girl, Carl is surprised to find himself feeling much better. But this happiness is short-lived upon the arrival of two groups of men – a trio of sinister corporate ‘Men in Black’ and two Asian thugs - who try to take the Chinese girl away by force. While Kolchak’s attempts to protect Yitt only result in him being beaten up, Yitt somehow manages to evade her pursuers, and she disappears into the night. Realising that he has fallen for the girl, Kolchak turns to Tony Vincenzo for help in finding Yitt; using the newspaper’s resources he eventually tracks the girl to a nunnery. Here, Carl learns from the mother superior that Yitt is an empath, capable of healing people by absorbing their pain into herself. Reunited with Yitt, Carl encourages her to come away with him; but as they leave the convent but they are once again faced with the trio of Men in Black – and Carl is promptly shot dead…

KOLCHAK: TALES OF THE NIGHT STALKER issue 2

Date of publication: 2004

Story: KYRIE

Carl’s new story about senility being associated with being able to communicate on a higher level with house pets as a result of collective community consciousness that all living things have because of ancient man’s contact with space aliens. Tony mentions stories about plant monsters and man eating shadows. Up in Seattle, the mayor’s son was missing and a cult was suspected. In two days, Carl gets the mayor’s son home. Miss Emily appears. Ron appears. Carl has a cat named Twinkles that he has Emily watch in the office. Lorelei is the name of the girl that gave Carl a lead to the kidnapped teen(s). She seems to know about past stories (a bull man for one). Publisher Morgan Slate appears. The mayor’s political rival used a satanic cult and kidnapped the son to make it look like the Mayor’s family did it. Or was involved in a cult.

Good Morning, America is mentioned by Emily.

Carl has a dream about being back in New Orleans, attacked by the man eating shadow (last issue). Charlevoix is seen as a ghost, telling Carl he’s seen the light. Carl contemplates returning to Chicago. When the Mayor’s son Toby calls Carl to give him info on a devil, Carl realizes it is Lorelei and sets a trap for her with three Catholic priests. One is named Father Lewis, who tells Carl that the warning letter came from a guardian angel. Morgan offered Carl the job that Tony has as the Hollywood Dispatch. Carl turns it down. Carl wants Tony to let him do the final piece on the spaceships. Carl once worked Tony’s job for Tony. He claims he can’t stand Tony. He turned down the job because, “It would be hell for me.”

The editorial, WELCOME TO MY WORLD has Dave Ulanski discuss a story where “Carl retires and starts a pachyderm farm in Wyoming where he discovers a secret underground race of cucumber people bent on world domination via sending mind control waves on sunbeams to humans while they slept. In April, Carl runs into Creatures of Habbit. Ron Frenz is the special guest artist next issue.

Oddity: Carl seems to be kissing Lorelei at the bottom of one page, or almost about to and…has his hand on her throat!?

Quote: “Was that possible? Were the police thanking me and shaking my hand?”

Tony refuses to print Kolchak’s story of pensioners, cats and aliens, preferring instead to send the reporter to Seattle to investigate a cult of devil-worshippers that have supposedly kidnapped the son of the city’s mayor. Arriving in Seattle, Kolchak finds it hard to get anywhere with the story – until he meets a beautiful red-head named Lorelei, who gives him the lead he is after. Kolchak cracks the case, discovering that the mayor’s rival in the upcoming elections was responsible for the kidnapping in order to involve the mayor in a scandal over cultists. As Kolchak’s popularity with his readership soars, he finds that all his wild stories are finally believed. Kolchak’s life finally takes a turn for the better, and after seeing Lorelei again, he finds himself falling in love with her. But when Kolchak is then offered Tony’s job as editor on the paper he begins to suspect that his sudden change of fortune is just too good to be true…

KOLCHAK: TALES OF THE NIGHT STALKER issue 4

Publication date: 2004

Story: Scratch

Time Frame: Less than a month before Halloween?

Notes: Publisher is Morgan Slate and he joined for a card game.

Story: Carl vs Mary Worth, Bloody Mary. The backstory seems to have happened about 15 years ago. (no source seems sure of the Mary story but the only one that seems even close to modern times that the Kolchak stuff takes place in is 1969, which would be 15 years before 1984. So, this could be 1984.

An after-work staff-meeting at the newspaper offices quickly turns into a game of poker, and it isn’t long before the topic of Carl Kolchak’s latest story comes up. As Tony Vincenzo, Ron Updike, Mr Slate and his yes-man Eric Statton listen on, Carl recounts the mysterious details surrounding a young girl’s death during a slumber party, supposedly at the hands of a vicious spirit named Bloody Mary. But instead of facing the usual ridicule, Carl is instead talked into spending a night in the old haunted house, accompanied by his fellow card-players. Some time later, the five of them arrive at the abandoned house, but a terrified Updike panics, driving off in the car and stranding the others, just as a wild storm breaks out overhead. Inside the old house, Carl glimpses a ghostly form in a mirror, and when Statton is attacked by an unseen assailant, his badly-scratched face bleeding furiously, Kolchak realises that Bloody Mary is real, and is using the mirrors’ reflections to stalk him and his colleagues around the house. Karl and Tony collect the mirrors and store them out of the way in the basement, but rainwater leaking inside the house provides the spirit with a means of escape. As the storm continues to rage, Kolchak must find a way to trap the deadly ghost – otherwise he will not last out the night…

Proxmity part one

Eric James Stalton was born in the 1960s (the tombstone has the date’s last two numbers blocked by a leaf). Carl is writing for a Halloween Feature so it is around that time of year. It is confirmed it is October. Carl and Tony are working in Los Angeles. Santiago Hernandez has worked a year on the burial tomb exhibit.

Monique Marmelstein “ was just an intern back in the days of the INS. She’s a reporter now” and “another of us unlucky souls who’ve found our way to Los Angeles under the loving wing of Tony Vincenzo.”  Not sure why the need to make things in LA instead of Chicago but there you go. They work for the Hollywood Dispatch.

“Over the next couple of days…”

Carl has a nightmare with a mummy in it. Carl sees a Dr. Regis. In his narrative, Carl mentions: zombies, werewolves, aliens, plant monsters, mirror witches, minotaurs, man eating shadows, nanobots, killer viruses, gremlins, and a “love affair with the devil.” Later, Carl has hallucinations about Peremalfait. Carl has been suffering for about two weeks and thinks it could be the curse of Imjah Ra. He seems to have an apartment over a bar. Carl appears shirtless in his apartment in one frame.

A week ago, according to Geraldine Weiss, the exhibit was shipped back. A day or so later, Carl hits on her or compliments her to get her to call Santiago.

A couple of days later. Emily and Ron appear. Morgan Slate is mentioned. The story ends on a cliffhanger with Carl and Santiago at a diner seeing images of Egyptian monsters: a jackal, a mummy and a vaguely goblin like being with Egyptian garb. Santiago has one arm.

After the funeral of Eric Stalton, victim of the creature named Bloody Mary, Kolchak meets two ghost hunters named Otto and Mo Brerhahrer; when questioned, Karl refuses to comment on his ghostly encounters, and leaves the duo behind at the cemetery. Returning to work at the newspaper, Kolchak’s next assignment is to cover a story at the Los Angeles History Museum; it seems that the new Egyptian exhibit was abruptly cancelled just prior to opening after the relics on show were ordered by international law to be returned to their homeland. Kolchak meets Professor Santiao Hernadez, who is extremely aggravated to see his life’s work being taken away from him; when he encourages Kolchak to take a small souvenir of the Egyptian treasures, the reporter chooses a statuette of a cat. However, this innocuous trinket soon demonstrates strange, unearthly powers, as Kochak becomes increasingly fatigued, and begins seeing creatures from Egyptian mythology. Then, as his sanity stretches to breaking point, Karl starts to wonder if his hallucinations are in fact real…

KOLCHAK: TALES OF THE NIGHT STALKER issue 6

Story: Proximity part two

After removing two ‘keepsakes’ from the artefacts recovered from the tomb of Imjah Ra, an ancient Egyptian vampire, Kolchak and Professor Hernadez have been plagued with terrifying visions of horrific creatures. The only way they can regain their sanity is to return the relics to Imjah Ra’s tomb; however, when they enter the ancient pyramid they come face to face with Imjah Ra’s mummy - a vicious monster that has somehow returned to life…

KOLCHAK: TALES OF THE NIGHT STALKER issue 7

Publication date: 2005

Story: The Saggath

Notes: the police friend of Carl’s returns and the homeless man named Virgil returns.

Kolchak is contacted by police officer Charlevoix, who asks for the reporter’s ‘specialised’ help in investigating a series of mysterious deaths in New Orleans. Kolchak realises that the murders have links to the plant monster and the shadow man – the Saggath – that he encountered during his previous visit to the city. He soon uncovers a link to the Crescent City Development company – and discovers that their experiments are far more sinister than Kolchak could ever have imagined…

The Framing Sequence AND Stoned:

The framing seems to be that Carl knows Tony a long time and is still working with him. Stoned is a story he recounts to Tony’s therapist. He claims he was in NY “a few years ago”. The story starts Oct 17th and 18th. Carl’s car is 23 years old. He has an old friend named Hodges as the Daily News. Clash of the Titans is one of Carl’s guilty pleasures. Carl vs a Medusa (or a Gorgon). When Tony Vincenzo seeks professional help for his stress, it emerges that Kolchak is the centre of his anxiety. The psychiatrist is curious and asks Kolchak, to pay him a visit; Kolchak agrees as a favour to his boss, and soon finds himself recounting three tales of his investigations into the world of the supernatural… While covering a nationwide talent search to find America’s new top fashion model, Kolchak meets Anya, the sister of Tanya Walker, one of the contestants. However, when Tanya’s body is found in a petrified state, he suspects that someone is deliberately sabotaging the contest. Could Tanya’s rival, the beautiful but enigmatic Athene Anetakis, be the deadly Medusa of ancient Greek legends..?

The Spike:

A framing story in a framing story? The LA stuff seems to be with Tony and Carl and on Oct 12th. Tony talks about 25 years ago. Carl goes looking for info 20 years ago and finds a NY story. Tony was a reporter but shortly left NY and became an editor. Carl tries to find out about the monster the Whisperer. Kolchak has always suspected that Tony Vincenzo knows more about the supernatural than he lets on. When Kolchak investigates the case of a woman torn to pieces in Brentwood, he finds ties to a case that Tony covered and buried twenty-five years ago – the case of a mysterious murderer known only as the ‘Whisperer’…

The Stuff I Leave Out

Kolchak doesn’t always get things right in the course of his investigations. When he goes looking for Roger Wills, a young boy who has recently disappeared, his mistaken belief that the boy has been kidnapped by a sex offender obsessed with satanic rituals nearly costs him his life…

Carl is a copyboy here AND a virgin. Jeff Rice was a copy boy in 1963. Carl meets Honey here, at a diner. They both save a young girl Consuela from a cult of Thoth run by Arden Absolute, who is using Ibis Club as a cover to kidnap virgin girls. It seems he’s done this before in other clubs he owned.

When Carl’s hair goes on fire, Honey slaps the straw hat on his head and it’s implied this is the first time he wears it. Carl mentions her legs. He is working for Chicago Independent. When Honey avoids telling him her name, Carl jokes it could be Erica, Madeline, or Hortense.

“What do you know, a lady dick, isn’t that an oxymoron?”

Story: It is Nov. 12th 1:15 pm in LA. Story ends on Nov. 13th. The experiments on Dimitri and the work of his Russian father happened in the 1980s when Dimtri was a baby. Dimtri looks to be about 25 to maybe 30? So this might be 2005? Possibly 2010?

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER: THE LOVECRAFT DAMNATION

Date of publication: 2010

Note: Illustrated text story.

Called to the office of Marvin Richards, host of the popular cable news show ‘Challenge of the Unknown’, Kolchak finds the man in a state of terror. Carl came to the aid of the newsman once before, when Richards and his team had been tricked by the immoral Doctor Randel Penes into purchasing a copy of the ancient book known as the Necronomicon; Penes used this evil tome to summon up an otherworldly demon named Nyogtha, causing the deaths of a score of people before he and the book were destroyed. Richards informs Kolchak that the studio is once again being menaced by a supernatural horror: it seems that Penes has returned, and so has the evil Necronomicon…

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER FILES issue 1

Date of Publication: 2010

Story: Untitled? Monster?: The Gargoth is a real demon monster used by movie maker director Jack Tyburn. Jack shoots the girl who leads Carl to him. Her name was Pilar Reyes. Carl burns down the studio which seems to stop the monster and the man. Carl thinks it’s been a long time that he’s seen a normal human man, a human being kill another.

Fictional Time Frame: Carl has left the Hollywood Dispatch.

Where now?: “Right here, right now” seems to be in Los Angeles.

Notes: at the end of comic book story, Kolchak thinks about this: “I liked Los Angeles, sure, but then, I’d liked Chicago, too. And Vegas. And I’d loved New York.”  He thinks it is time to move on and is looking at Miami, Florida. (At first, I thought this might be a nod to the character, Darren McGavin played in the X FILES as that character, Arthur Dales, had lived in Florida for a time).

Carl meets Tony at Papa Dino’s. Tony says Ron is on assignment up in Sacramento and Emily is visiting her sister in Boca Raton for a few weeks.

Invited to lunch by Vincenzo, Kolchak is handed a package that arrived for him at the ‘Hollywood Despatch’, sent by Stu Phipps of Bakersfield. The parcel contains news clippings and reports detailing a number of missing persons: various actors and crew associated with the B-horror movie series ‘Blood of the Gargoth’, including Stu’s younger sister, an actress named Allison Phipps, who also recently disappeared under mysterious circumstances... Deciding to investigate, Kolchak soon finds himself locking horns with Jack Tyburn, the independent producer-director responsible for the gore-splattered movie series – and quickly learns that the footage Tyburn has of the horrific beast called the Gargoth may not be down to mere special effects at all…

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER FILES issue 2

Date of publication: 2011

Story: SWAMP THINGS part 1

Fictional Month and Day: August 17th.

Notes: Carl is seeking employment in Miami, Florida. He mentions the Fourth Estate that he worked for.

The Fourth Estate is a jargon term for the portions of the United States Department of Defense that are not the military Services or Intelligence Community agencies including: the Office of Economic Adjustment. Fourth Estate entities are all organizational entities in DoD that are not in the military departments, IC agencies, or combatant commands. Archibald Leach was editor in chief of The World Bulletin, a weekly newspaper, which makes the Hollywood Dispatch look like the NY Times. Carl mentions Korea.

Erin Cho was working on the beat Carl will now get. She was working for four years on that beat. She calls Carl by the name of Kojak. Carl corrects her, “Kojak’s the bald one.”  Carl’s narration mentions a practice he would recommend: a child looking for monsters under his bed every night.

Bernie Fain, who was there when Carl drove a stake through Janos Skorzeny, appears. Carl tells Bernie he tracked down Gail and Carl tracked her down. She is in St. Louis, married and a couple of girls. He thinks she’s happy. Bernie read a book Carl wrote. Bernie apparently describes Fox Mulder, who he met before he left the Bureau. He calls him a real spooky kid who had some of Carl’s clippings on his wall. Sandra Anne Baen is an editorial intern, age 24. Carl takes his coffee black.

Possible monster: attacks have been made and Archie mentions the Florida skunk ape.

Erin loves Carl’s hat.

Quotes: “Who is this guy, Archie? He looks like a refugee from a summer stock production of the FRONT PAGE.”

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER FILES issue 3

Date of publication: 2011

Story: SWAMP THINGS part 2

Fictional Month and Day: August 18th or 19th?

Marshall Potter was on the hunt for two weeks. One of the criminal victims had a wife whose grandfather tells Carl the legend that the female Earth that the next one, either Skunk Ape or Seminole Native to spill blood would be removed from this world. He believes the Skunk Ape cannot kill people. Marshall asks about a giant mutant deer. Carl tells Marshall Potter a story about a casino that was possessed, not just the roulette table. He called an old high school buddy who was a priest now. The craps table was stubborn. Potter is killed by an amphibian man thing but skunk apes come to kill it. Apparently, it stole their nest. No bodies were found.

Quote: “There are monsters even among monsters. And some monsters…really aren’t so bad.”

The inside back cover advertises a pocket thriller called THE LOST CITY, which was changed to THE LOST WORLD.

Kolchak finally falls on his feet when he is offered the post of lead columnist at ‘The World Bulletin’, “America’s favourite weekly newspaper”, by its editor-in-chief, Archibald Leach. Readily accepting the job, Kolchak quickly finds his first story, investigating reports of a brutal swamp monster roaming the Florida everglades…

PHASES OF THE MOON

Date of publication: 2011

This is where things get confusing. This is a hard cover and inside PHASES OF THE MOON book two has that title above KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER FILES which seems to also have issue 2 on the cover. The inside front cover has KOLCHAK! And also PHASES OF THE MOON part four and Kolchak in “YOU OUTTA BE IN PICTURES.”

There is also a KOLCHAK text story called END GAME.

The inside front cover also has the title PHASES OF THE MOON-FULL MOON. Huh?

Other heroes include Domino Lady, The Spider, Honey West, Sheena, Buckaroo Bonzai, and Captain Action, not in that order.

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER AND DR. MOREAU

Date of publication: 2013

After missing his flight connection back to L.A., Kolchak is forced to return by road; en route he learns of a gruesome attack in Winnetka, Illinois, at the home of Doctor Eloise Lochley, and decides to investigate. At the crime scene Carl meets an old colleague, Chief Detective Irene Lamont, who allows him to join her team as they search the house full of animal tracks and human bones picked clean. When Doctor Lochley arrives to find her home in turmoil, Kolchak questions her and learns that her son, Eli, recently disappeared; Eli was a member of ‘Animals are People Too’, an activist group that has been causing trouble in the area. As Kolchak continues to work the case, the military receive a tip off and mount a raid on the headquarters of APT; however, as they approach the group’s farmhouse, they are cut down one by one by a pack of vicious animal-human hybrids. Lamont, Kolchak and a squad of police pay Doctor Lochley a visit and find her sharing her home with another pack of hybrid creatures, descendants of a human-animal experiment by a real-life Doctor Moreau from over a century ago. Lochley reveals that the hybrids were dying out until she introduced prehistoric cells into their DNA – cells taken from ice samples that Kolchak remembers only too well, from a previous case involving killer ape-men. The doctor also tells Kolchak and Lamont that she injected Eli with the DNA too, to prevent her son dying from Alzheimer’s... Meanwhile, the other pack goes on the offensive: using weapons taken from the soldiers, they begin attacking random humans, and then devouring their prey…

Unnaturally Normal

Publication date: 2016

“This year the holiday (Halloween) falls on a Friday.”

Carl works for the Hollywood Dispatch. Henry Hornkamp is a street source who visits Carl every Halloween. Carl’s been to the Irish Pub Harrington’s and the last time he was there it was less than a pleasant experience. An actor got shot there a few years back. Henry is the first one who didn’t want money from Carl but a story! Carl is not liked by officer Lasutta but an officer Camille sets him on a witness of a werewolf attack. Carl meets Dan. Carl accidentally activates the Skull of Sythnoxx. When returns from the Big Uneasy world, the unnatural quarter, a slightly different Earth, he finds he lost two whole days. When Kolchak returns, a vampire named Vlad comes with him but is now human. Vincenzo asks Carl where he was all weekend so Nov 1 and 2 have probably passed and it is either Nov 2 or 3.
