LOST IN SPACE vs STAR TREK (really? Still?)

Well, LOST IN SPACE, with some imagination from the viewer, still has something otherness that STAR TREK never had nor ever will, that family loyalty and/or the idea that just around the corner of the next rock or tree (and maybe all four Irwin shows had this) anything can be waiting and anything can happen or anyone or anything can show up. There's also a pioneer feel to LIS and LAND OF THE GIANTS, TIME TUNNEL, and VOYAGE that TREK never had. There's almost always someone already there where the Trekkers beam down to. Don't get me wrong: TREK has some wonderful scripts but overall I like the Irwin people better, especially in GIANTS and LOST IN SPACE as they were more like real people talked like real people and acted like real people and there were even kids in the cast that I could relate to. TREK was far too serious. LIS did get far too far from action adventure and space mystery but the science was ALWAYS wrong right from the second episode ever, where a comet or supernova is headed their way and expands the heat of their ship and John fires a hole in an alien spaceship without any adverse effect. The so called camp also hit the first season with SPACE CROPPERS but if Smith didn't do what he did, the show would have been cancelled. In fact, Irwin was tied down by the network: he couldn't do much with Maureen, Judy, Don, and John because they didn't want to show them being romantic in ANY way, not even holding hands. Kissing was out and Judy visiting Don at night in his room was OUT and vice verse. The kids were not supposed to show too much fear, the kids could not see Maureen in any danger, then the edict came that mom was not to be in ANY danger because it would distress kids everywhere, the monsters weren't to be too frightening and Smith was not to be alone with Will and/or Penny together or separate. With the Robot evil, too, the kids were not to be alone with him either or together. When Harris' antics rose ratings, Irwin said to him do more because it worked and saved the show. If you watch the early episodes, you will see that the Robinsons, apart from Smith, did the most stupid things. They were not good scientists or even knowledgeable about science and space in eps like THE RAFT. John, Don, Maureen, and Judy make the stupidest mistakes, especially in ONE OF OUR DOGS IS MISSING and THE OASIS (which also had huge science problems as well as medical issues, too). Having Smith bear the brunt of all the mistakes makes the family look smarter and also more loving and forgiving and saintly. Also in RETURN FROM OUTER SPACE, the carbon tet, once used in the pre 70s as a preservative, was found to be...not so good at that and poisonous so in the 1990s that would have been known, too. LIS was not perfect but for the premise, the hardware, the cast, and the possibilities, I will ALWAYS prefer it (and LAND OF THE GIANTS as well) to ANY STAR TREK.
