BATMAN 80-A RIDDLING CONTROVERSY
BATMAN 80-A
RIDDLING CONTROVERSY
Okay, after
the Batfight (Across is a handsome henchman), Riddler talks to Robin about his “friend”
Batman and on the word “friend” looks at West’s crotch! Just why does the bomb
trap puzzle that Riddler put Anthony Aquila in allow for Batman and Robin to
let Riddler and Anna Gram go? Also if Aquila is supposed to be Cuban murderer
dictator Castro, why must he be saved? The Robin stunt double is still very
obvious and while in the 60s it wasn’t clear, it sure is in HD. Robin
disengages that one rod and it unlocks the entire cage. Burt’s problem…well,
let’s just say it’s almost always there and put an end to it! A long end.
For the
first time, I actually saw West purposefully step in front of Ward. It’s when
the Batmobile pulls up to the statue area to meet O’Hara and Gordon and the duo
emerge from the BatMobile. Robin walks across the BatMobile’s hood and jumps
down. West as Batman steps right in front of him!
Not sure if
the BATBOOK credits the telegram bicyclist as Newsie but he’s another
handsome well built man. He arrives and
hilariously asks the foursome, “Is one of you called Batman?”
NOTE: as
dressed as the street cleaner, Astin looks sinister enough as a villain. IF they had just used some other
name for his villain, he might not have been
so…miscast as Riddler. In other words, as a new villain he might have
succeeded and the story might not be so reviled.
When the Bat
Computer is activated, I notice, for once, these side desks that I never
noticed before. It looks like a still of the Bat Cave and looks…different. The streets
and cars seen as Batman and Robin drive down them figuring out the riddles look…ancient
even for 1967. They seem to be the 1950s?
There really
was a Bud Furillo who worked for the paper called the LA Herald Examiner.
Okay, when
the professor activated the demolecularizer he did it manually. Riddler, unseen
but just talked about, managed to get into the Police HQ, hide the pen shaped
demolcularizer and make it work automatically? WHAT? If that’s not bad enough,
Riddler paid 3000 dollars for it and would he just leave it there? And why
haven’t the police found it behind the couch?
That’s far
too many silly mistakes even for this show!
BatCopter!
Or footage from the movie? The Bat Cycle! It looks different somehow as if it
were a cheap knock off? We haven’t seen a good bat climb in ages either. Sigh.
During the fight, Robin has Riddler and a henchman (extra ones always seem to
appear for the fight) try to push him down the trick puzzle floor where spikes
stick out and once again he has to yell for help, “Help, Batman!” He really is
a liability. Anna Gram kicks Robin even as O’Hara holds her.
The
Professor returns the money to the charity out of conscience and in return once
he’s paid his debt to society, he will work for the Gotham City Science
Institute.
“Across” is
played by a baseball player: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Lefebvre
All in all,
not a bad episode but not a very good one thanks to Gorshin not being in it.
And with at least one lapse of judgement regarding plot (see above). Other than
that, a pretty standard episode.
What I can’t
believe is that there are still some 14 episodes left to go in this HUGE second
season.
