DOCTOR WHO: BOTH SIDES OF THE WOKE ISSUE? Scripts?
Some people on both sides of the DOCTOR WHO woke issue are totally wrong. Some use the idea that the woke destroyed the show last year (years as we can count 2023 in on that crap) and some say the show was always woke. No, no, and no.
The show was never like the garbage crap writing we are getting now, even during the awful Moffat years. To say that people are calling out the woke is wrong, they're calling out how badly written it is or rather that side of the issue IS wrong if all they focus on is that the show is desperately trying to bring diversity, representation, and issues to the public---if that is the only criticism---they ARE wrong.
The main problem here is that "woke" stuff has been done for years and years but when it is well written as in THE FUGITIVE, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, STARMAN, KUNG FU, OUR HOUSE, LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRARIES, BONANZA and many, many others like BIG VALLEY, IRONSIDE, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, BEWITCHED, it's GREAT and gives us an awareness of those issues and how underrepresented those issues and minorities are/were.
PROBLEM with DW is NOT the woke but the scripts and how the WOKE and the SCIENCE and the LOGIC are written into them: BADLY. AND To be fair, fans seem to pretend DW was always WOKE, well, no, not really.
Sure, it has some issues presented about the environment and the underdog but honestly, it NEVER had fair representation and diversity. One need only look at how in history the non whites were presented as evil, non whites were often relegated to guards and like the really dumb one in THE MUTANTS and/or the mute villain turned sacrificial victim hero in both TOME OF THE CYBERMEN and EVIL OF THE DALEKS and DIE. So no, your argument has some slight merit but CLASSIC WHO wasn't woke enough! BUT to just implant woke characters into it without any thought to logic and rapport and sound backgrounds is just ...well garbage and DW, let's not fool ourselves and pretend it's any good (it's not) now, is garbage.
Just finished a show like WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE which makes one see the drama in the comedy, has great characters who care about each other and feel real even if they are exaggerated. The Doctor and his UNIT friends do not feel like they are real and don't even feel fun which, the original series, with out there characters like Leela and Romana, almost always felt real and if not, felt as if these characters were fresh, different, exciting, funny and had a great a rapport with the Doctor and many other characters who loved them and so we loved them. The 15th Doctor and Ruby just do not work because they have no real connection to anyone ...and therefore to us.
AND all of that is reflected in the poor writing in garbage like 73 Yards and Empire of Death. It IS garbage and DW fans might fear cancellation if we say so...so we pretend it was "good". It's not. Last season and 2023 had a few minor 7/10 episodes (maybe three or four) but overall it is a huge POS and I predict cancellation soon or major changes to make the show more relatable, the characters more likable and the science back in the science fiction. DW is sad now and the quality is low rent fantasy without rules or explanations or meaning. DW literally sucks.
Addition: some of you missed the entire point: bad writing is NOT the result of woke idealogy; it's just bad writing; I mention several shows from the past that would be considered woke but were well written, enthralling, exciting and didn't focus on just those ideals, some of them great ideals (equality, diversity, love, loyalty, getting along with all kinds of different people, anti prejudice, etc). I feel both sides of this are wrong: bad writing is bad writing and blaming it on woke stuff is wrong and sometimes those who complain about bad writing as attacked by the woke crowd (the worst of the liberals who have really lost their minds on a few issues) for attacking anything with those ideals. It's not the ideals, it's the way they are written into the scripts now, MOSTLY in DW. Take Rose2: I would have loved a trans companion who was real world and gave us a real world perspective and related well to everyone in a real world way while going through incredible adventures like all the DW companions. BUT that's not what they did, not what they wrote, and not what happened. I don't even feel she represented trans people in a great way, no rapport, no real connection to reality, no personality and no connection to the audience, whoever they may be. Which is a shame because that actress was GREAT in HEARTSTOPPER, a much better written show (though season 3 had issues). Instead they squeezed her into an already written plotline from a comic book (which was superior in comic book form) and a Donna/Doctor reunion which was also badly written (Donna being a total nag hag blaming witch who gave away her money, wants to sell an alien for money, blames the Doctor and quits her jobs for stu pit reasons while making her harassed husband work two to make ends meet, what a dough pah). What could have been done with a trans companion wasn't and it's a shame as I think in the hands of a skilled, sensitive writer, that idea might have worked. Sadly, RTD is no longer a skilled writer or show runner and he made a mess of that, as well as other things.
