DARK SHADOWS 556

DARK SHADOWS 556

“I intend, my dear, to create a race of super beings who will serve my master and control the world.”

“I haven’t seen many policemen as handsome as you are.”

“Then Victoria Winters will die!”

Lara. Vicki has been missing 24 hours. House by the Sea looks odd; the background looks strange. Reprise is different.

In this reprise, someone was nice enough to pin Vicki’s hair back differently so it’s not longish and hanging to the sides of her face! There is no echo when she screams, “Help! HALP!”  Someone was also nice enough to clean up that large cardboard box and replace with a kind of cheap wood garbage basket…that Vicki knocks into and starts it shaking slightly. AND this time she moves back to the window that’s been boarded up for her dialog where in the last episode’s cliffhanger, she did NOT.

Of note: there are only about 22 episodes left of Alexandra Moltke as Vicki.

Angelique opens her eyes. Blair calls her useful. The irony of poetic justice makes him laugh. She wonders how long he is going to make her suffer. She disobeyed him and now is his slave totally.

She has cravings but he tells her to attack only who he says to attack and warns her to stay away from Barnabas as Barnabas and Adam are somehow connected or that he can create another.

His plan: to create a race of super beings that will serve his master and control the world, a new species of man.

The mistakes made with the original Adam will not happen this time. He plays with a set of weights, knowing that he has all the power and one set of scales outbalances the other. He invokes the names of the original Adam and of Eve, of whom there will soon be another! He also wants Adam to have sons. His getting Julia and Barnabas to do what he wants relies on his kidnap victim. He says, “Victoria Winters.”

A sheriff’s man comes to the house. He says “Good evening.” It strikes me that this HOUSE BY THE SEA interior is really just Eric Lang’s house sets redone and some not even redecorated.

She tells this man she is the secretary. He questions her about Thomas Jennings. “Do you know him?”  Angelique answers, “Only slightly.”  There is a shadow.

NOTE: While he questions her, Lara’s Angelique does NOT blink and her eyes are quite scary, as she’s looking at the man as if he IS food!

NOW what is this next scene? Angelique tells the man, “You’re so handsome…”  for a sheriff’s man. The rest is a seduction of the man leading up to her almost biting him and as close to this show as current soap sex scenes that DS might ever get to.

Nicholas Blair stops her biting the man. Tom is alive but in a coma. He left the house at 8:30 or 8:45 or was attacked at 8:45.

After the man leaves, Blair considers a sunlight death for Angelique. He has something for her to do though. He wants her to visit Victoria Winters and he wants it to be the most terrifying experience she has ever had in her life.

We hear the doorknob, perhaps of another room outside Vicki’s room. Angelique comes in, “Victoria Winters, so we meet again.”  She is dressed in her full 1795 dress and cape.

Outside the window in Vicki’s room is…bricks? Wood? Vicki tells Angelique that she died in 1795. Angelique gets, “I know.”

Vicki wonders thanks to the witch vampire that perhaps she is back in time again. Vicki says the place and Angelique are all so unreal. Angelique supposes that Vicki and this room are lost in a void, a  pocket in time caught between  the past and the present but belonging to neither.

Angelique tries to convince her she is here to help but Vicki knows that Angelique was just vicious and cruel to her in the past. Angelique asks for her engagement ring.

Blooper? Angelique doesn’t move and seems to forget her line. Vicki asks, “Where are you going?”  Another blooper? What?

Angelique flubs, “I only exist…I don’t exist in time..”

Lara flubs again, “Wordly possessions have nothing…mean nothing to me.”

ANOTHER DVD JUMP. Angelique is rebuffed so will leave, never to return. Vicki then asks, as Angelique moves to leave, “Where are you going?” Again.

Vicki will spend eternity in this room. Vicki gives her the ring and begs her to take it to Jeff Clark.

Angelique asks who is this Jeff, there is no Jeff, only Peter Bradford. “There is no Jeff Clark, he does not exist. There is only Peter Bradford.”  She leaves but her laughing lingers.

Wait? That was the most terrifying experience of her life? The encounters with Bill Malloy’s ghost and Laura were more terrifying. As well as that figure in the early episode.

Adam’s had a haircut? Blair, in the woods, with gloves and hat on, gives Adam the ring. He instructs Adam as to what to do and say.

Barnabas voice over. He is in a chair reading or thinking about Vicki. He wears the red smoking jacket.

Adam is suddenly in the drawing room. How’d he get there?

He gives the ring to Barnabas and stretches out his word PROVES as he says, “It PROVVVES that I am holding her.”

Barnabas Teleprompter. He tells Adam that if he wants revenge to kill him, not Vicki. If Barnabas does not agree to the plan, tomorrow night Victoria Winters will die.

Review: We get several answers here and you must love ANY DS ep that gives you those. Blair reveals his plans; Angelique is shown as the awakened Vampire; and she even tells Vicki that Jeff IS Peter and there is no real Jeff!

Unfortunately much of this is done as mere talk; I honestly thought Blair revealed his plans to us at the same time that he revealed them to Julia much, much later than this.

Still, it makes sense to give the audience answers now after so much has gone on in 1968 thus far…it would be nice to think they kept it for as long as the end of 1968’s storyline…as it is this is not bad but… anyone getting tired of Adam threatening to kill just Vicki? If so, just wait…and the love scene between Angelique or rather her seduction is both unsettling and disturbing as well as seemingly out of place on DS but it…seems so at ease with itself as if this happened all the time on the show.

Dark Shadows bloopers to watch out for:

Lara Parker has a particularly hard time remembering her lines in the first act, looking at the teleprompter after almost every line.

Just after Angelique shows the Deputy into the drawing room, you can see someone’s shadow go past the doorframe in the hall.

Angelique asks Vicki, “Would I want to take your ring if I weren’t trying to help you? I only exist — I don’t exist in time. Worldly possessions have nothing to me, mean nothing to me.”
