GOTHAM KNIGHTS-13-NIGHT OF OWLS
GOTHAM
KNIGHTS-13-NIGHT OF OWLS
Well, again,
the CW cancelled the wrong series. This should NOT be cancelled.
Then again,
neither should STARGIRL (it became watchable in season two, good in season
three, and excellent in season four); NAOMI (though sagging toward the end,
this had promise and a great premise and cast); TOM SWIFT (the times this aired
were terrible but this show was excellent and if properly promoted, this, too,
would have taken off and if given time; another excellent cast); and possibly
BLACK LIGHTNING (though I would rather have seen a spinoff with Joran Calloway
as Khilil Payne/Painkiller). I’m sure I missed a few that should never have
been cancelled. There are a few that should have been canned right away (DC
LEGENDS once it became too stupid for words and too dumb to watch). SUPERMAN
AND LOIS has two incredible seasons and then it had the third (though the last
two episodes of season three were okay, the cancer storyline and the bratification
of Jordan as well as domestic DYNASTY storylines ruined the show and they kept
that, while reducing just about ¾ s of the cast). The CW does not know what it
is doing, reactive to rating instead of giving shows a chance to develop.
Case in
point: GOTHAM KNIGHTS. It started with a great pilot (so did BATWOMAN but that
totally sucked until the last season, which, again, got it canned). Then it
sagged a bit but then picked up quickly with a wonderful turn by Misha Collins
as Harvey Dent. Initially I wasn’t turned on by another Dent story but by the
season finale, Collins’ turn as Dent was marvelous and he IS Harvey Dent, both
sides of him. The Duela redemption storyline was great. Oscar Morgan as Turner
became more solid as Turner found out the truth about his parents and their
killer, about Batman and possibly his killer (who did kill Batman?), and the
man who trained both his parents and Bruce Wayne. Stunning growth from both the
actor and his character but this can be said about all of the characters.
By season’s end,
they had me wanting more…but the CW renewed SUPERMAN AND LOIS instead and
canned this innovative and exciting series. You truly do not know who might
live and who might die. It’s almost a better version of the far too dark ARROW
but with more jokes and better plotting. I really want more.
Here is the
synopsis for the last episode so spoilers:
SPOILERS so
attention seekers stop now!
While the knights are questioned by the
police, Rebecca takes Duela hostage in order to force Harvey’s other side out.
The Talons arrive to kill the Knights but Commissioner Soto frees them and they
fight back but Carries mother gets hurt. Duela contacts the others over the
phone connected to the bomb which reveals Rebecca’s plan to destroy all
building designed by Allan Wayne and cover her tracks. Duela bonds with Harvey
and he lets his other self out who tries to kill Rebecca and gets burned with
acid. Rebecca wants to frame Duela but the Knights intervene. Brody injects his
mother with Elektrum which is fatal. Turner wants to find his father’s journals
so he stays behind when the building explodes. The Gotham Knights decide to
stick together for Turner who is alive and taken by Henri Ducard, the man his
parents worked for as assassins.
Not one
moment was wasted here and Rebecca became a villain to be reckoned with; Brody
steps up; Duela steps up and Dent becomes the things of nightmares and horror
movies without overtaking the entire episode. It’s a great balance they found in
this episode. I REALLY want more. I wonder if the comics might continue this?
On the other
hand, I totally forgot SUPERMAN AND LOIS was new last night and it’s not on the
services yet. Meh.
GOTHAM
KNIGHTS deserved another season or two. Or three…
BTW, when
Robin’s mom got “killed” I actually felt something for the characters of the
mother and Robin. I actually cared that she not suffer or die. That means a lot
in a TV landscape that doesn’t really do that now. I mean people die, lots of people
but this lead up and the action and the reason she was where she was and doing
what she was doing (helping someone) was touching and meant something. GOTHAM
KNIGHTS became must watch TV, despite what the awful WE GOT YOU COVERED news
reviews state. This show is superior to SUPERMAN AND LOIS in every way.
