WE CAN BE HEROES
WE CAN BE HEROES-just spotted this wonderfully cast, highly
imaginative kids’ movie that is really more sophisticated than one might think
on first look: it’s a fun filled, enjoyable, entertaining parody of the Marvel
Avengers movies with a bit of X Men thrown in to and it really can inform those
movies, especially the fractured X MEN movies (who’s theme seems to be
friendship doesn’t really exist, all friends will let you down, betray you and
eventually kill you, utterly) in that team work really works…uhm, and feels
great, too.

With such as cast of well known celebs and bright talented
newcomers, I’m surprised this movie is not better known or talked about. It is
hilarious.
First, all of the powers of the kids are either original (a
girl who can draw the future?!) or wonderful satires on existing powers in the
more serious movies. “Serious”. Slo Mo is faster than anyone but he is so fast
that he’s been in a time warp that slows his every move down. It’s a wonderful
gimmick that highlights some of the best scenes as Slo Mo has to catch up.
A-Capella can sing low and high, resulting in things flying or shaking, and
this is used to great effect, too. I don’t think it’s too much of a spoiler to
say that at one point she sings a short part of the Mary Tyler Moore theme
song! OMG, I love this movie. It truly needs a sequel. Looks like Netflix
agrees.
Another kid, the little girl, Guppy, is the daughter of cult
movie SHARKBOY AND LAVAGIRL and she, too, affords the movie some of the best scenes.
It’s always funny seeing a very small girl throw around and beat up fully grown
ass adults. Or running along corridors after the others and before Slo Mo.
The movie is almost 100 percent perfect in every scene if
you don’t take things too seriously. It’s fun. I’m not totally sure the resolution
to the plot, which I won’t spoil, makes sense but does it matter much? Not
really, everything else about this movie is what movies and TV shows are made
for: FUN and escapism. It fulfills both very, very well.
