BOWLING TEAM is somewhat of an annoying episode but it does teach Archie that the world is changing…even if it usually means he loses out. There’s not a lot fun here as Archie is frustrated and not many funny lines.
The same is true of HOSPITAL where Archie is either in pain or in hospital. The dopey doctor he has that smokes is not funny but completely gross and annoying. It’s ironic that he bonds with a black French guy but since he’s been shown as prejudiced against the French, I’m not sure this premise works much. The humor feels forced though the actor playing Jean Duval is good. One very funny scene is when Louise and Lionel come to visit Archie in the hospital where Archie can’t see Duval but Duval believes Louise and Lionel are Archie’s family. Louise brings Archie a pie or cake, which is nice. I don’t get why Louise getting her hand kissed makes her so giddy and silly. It’s not funny either. Archie seeing Duval has a reaction from Archie that I’m not sure I like. At all. It’s also not funny.
OH SAY has yet another annoying character in Bill who is played by Larry Storch of F TROOP fame. Bill is a cheating old friend obsessed with being and looking young. Archie’s worried and frustrated in this episode, too. It doesn’t make for a lot of fun though Archie does have some fun back and forth with Kelsey in this episode and I think in BOWLING, too.
The funniest of the four is GOES TOO
FAR. Most of the laughs, after Archie causes Mike to leave, happen at Trudy’s
house where Archie comes up against two other friends who have a daddy that
think Archie is communist and who sing a song to him. He sees through them,
calling them little pinkos. He also tells Edith to take off that “Chinkie robe.”
He also never admits he was wrong even when the others all do.
For some
reason, I don’t find ALL IN THE FAMILY all that funny anymore. That might
change as the seasons move on but I have my doubts. Of course there are laugh
out loud moments here and there thanks to O’Connor and the rest of the cast.
BUT the plots, some of the guest characters and the anticipation of it being
totally uproarious and then being disappointed make it not a great viewing
experience.
