DARK SHADOWS 589

DARK SHADOWS   589

“The things that are happening in this house, frighten me.”

Nancy B. Two women, Vicky Winters and Maggie Evans, are in grave danger. Joshua’s grave reads 1755 to 1830 but I still think it looks a lot like 1880. Different reprise. Willie says, I don’t know anything.”  While Maggie figuring things out and talking out loud, we hear something fall or crumble and / or roll on the floor. She repeats herself.

Maggie says, “You know too. He isn’t human,”  she tells Willie. Maggie adds, “Barnabas Collins is one of the living dead.”

She says he came to her room one night and cast a kind of a spell over her. “After that I didn’t know what I was doing.”

Maggie remembers everything. Willie asks her, “Do you want to live?” Willie cries. Maggie realizes, “You helped him.”

She also realizes it actually happened. He tells her he couldn’t help it: he was under Barnabas’s power. She asks meekly, “Are…are you under his power now?”  “No, not exactly,”  Willie says. Maggie remembers he was kind to her and tried to help her. She wants to go to the police.

“Maggie, you don’t understand.”

NOTE: What is with Maggie’s eyebrows? She looks like she has two sets: her own and eyeliner or something?

Willie tells her that Barnabas is different now and that he has to keep her here for now. It is for her own good. She thinks he’s lying. Maggie blames Willie who keeps saying he was under his power. She thinks Barnabas will want her to be Josette all over again.

Roger, Vicki, and Barnabas. Vicki thinks it could have been Adam that attacked her but she didn’t see anyone.  Vicki gets an IDK.

Barnabas is almost happy and smiling that Vicki didn’t see Adam’s face. Carolyn told Roger that it was Adam. Barnabas tries to convince Roger that it was not Adam, when previously he told Carolyn that Julia saw Adam in the woods and Carolyn told Roger. Roger says, “IDU you at all. You seem to be defending the man.”

Carolyn comes and thinks it is not fair to blame Adam. Both she and Barnabas try to dissuade this notion that it was Adam.

As Barnabas leaves, Roger says, “It’s odd.”  Carolyn asks, “What is?”   Roger answers, “Barnabas…”  and pauses before adding more. He goes on to say Barnabas knew about Vicki being attacked before it happened. Carolyn wonders if it is a 6th  sense. Roger adds, “ESP” and goes on to say that he is not inclined to believe such things.

Carolyn bluffs and lies and asks what reason Barnabas would have to defend Adam. Roger’s answer: IDK.

Carolyn tells Roger that she is going away for a few days. She will be leaving for Boston. Roger is not happy, bringing up her mother and Vicki.

Carolyn tells him that Mrs. Johnson can look after David. Carolyn cites her own nerves after all the things that have happened. Some of this episode seems like re-dubs or reshoots and the sound seems to be new versions over old. We hear a car sound as Carolyn leaves.

Barnabas comes back from having brought Vicki upstairs. He asks what’s wrong. Roger’s answer, “Oh, it’s Carolyn. IDU her.”  Roger tells Barnabas she left and Barnabas leaves.

10:50 pm; Barnabas voice over. Carolyn is already in the drawing room of the Old House. She is calm about all of this including the experiment. Barnabas says IDU.

Barnabas wants to be honest with her (?!) and tells her the danger. She still wants to do it.

In the crypt, Willie smokes a cigarette. It’s been a long time since anyone smoked on the show! Maggie gets an idea that Willie might be the same as Barnabas. He tells her he is not. He touches her and she screams and passes out. Willie goes out.

Barnabas is playing with his ring. He has a voice over. Barnabas never realizes Carolyn was that attached to Adam. Willie comes in and he tells Willie about Adam and Vicki’s attack.

“Barnabas, there’s something about Maggie Evan’s you don’t know.”

Willie tells him about Maggie remembering. Willie tells him that if she tells they will come and get him and destroy him. UHM, HEY HE’S NOT A VAMPIRE ANY MORE so how can they prove it? At worst, they can’t just kill him.

Review: Despite the melodrama or maybe because of it, and despite the odd forced use of Carolyn in the experiment, this is still very, very exciting. What is going to  happen? NO ONE can say that if they are a DS fan, they weren’t intrigued by what might happen with Maggie and Barnabas; Carolyn in the experiment and her allegiance or not to Blair. These episodes just make one want to watch more.

In the teaser, when Maggie says, “He brought me here, one night after I tried to escape!” — something rattles across the floor in the studio.

There’s a tape edit in the first act, right after Maggie says, “We’ve got to go to the police!”

When Roger and Carolyn are standing at the drawing room door, someone in the studio coughs.

When Barnabas leaves Collinwood, the clock in the foyer says it’s 10:50; they do a big close-up on it just to stress that point. In the next scene, Barnabas has walked back to the Old House, and the clock on the mantel says 5:32. That was a hell of a long hike from Collinwood.

John: If I were Roger, I'd certainly be mystified why Collinwood appears to be the home of the Adam Booster Club. It does seem uncharacteristic of everyone to suddenly be supporting the strange fugitive.

Christine: Roger shows off how hip he is by bringing up Extra Sensory Perception today. How long before he's giddily calling for another séance?

John: It's strange that Carolyn can speak so freely about being involved in an experiment to give Adam a mate when she's not (as far as we know) aware that he's a patchwork of dead tissue. Funny thing is - if Adam knew Blair could have this much control over Carolyn, he'd know that he could also give him what he truly wants, and make Carolyn love him. But no, Blair wants to build his master race of supermen slaves...

Christine: I was confused when Barnabas asked if she felt frightened when she learned the truth about Adam, since I don't remember her learning the truth about Adam. I have to assume that he assumed she knew Adam was a fabricated man since she knew of the experiment to create another life and was willing to participate. Barnabas really should have recognized the dreamy quality Carolyn has when she's under someone's power, and suspected Blair's involvement.
