Carl was a serviceable pitcher in baseball in college and throws a hag stone into Huw’s mouth.

There are rumors of a monster living in Bala Lake, aka Lake Tegid. Carl uses a demijohn, a glass jar and puts the hag stone which sucked Huw into it, and seals it with wax. He drops that into the lake with lead weight in the jar.

Liz dies (she had had a heart attack earlier). Carl drinks bourbon. Liz left Andrew her house and he found a job. Carl returned to Florida once Andrew found a job. Andrew relays to Carl that he found himself a nice boyfriend. Carl is not sure Andrew ever made up with his parents but Andrew relayed that he wanted to become a journalist, which Carl thinks is flattering or supposed it is.

Question: Could Andrew be Carl’s grandson?

KOLCHAK THE NIGHT STALKER: DOUBLE FEATURE

THE NIGHT KILLERS (the third movie)

Kolchak in Hawaii.

(note: 1904: Enrico Poluzzi founded INS, gave it up shortly after the end of WW1; Abe Marmelstein owns it now.)

More notes: Kolchak discusses this, "I believe I caught the attention of something. God or the devil or alien creatures or some kind of incomprehensible cosmic mind. Something that doesn't tolerate disinterested observers, something that demands that he who studies it must participate in it. Things started happening to me, strange things."

The man he is talking to believes that it is a phenomenon that includes patterns undecipherable and improbably coincidences and odds. He warns Carl to stop because the more prying into the paranormal of any kind, the more Carl will open himself up to influences he can never hope to understand or cope with.

THE NIGHT CHICAGO DIED (the first chapter is WELCOME TO CHICAGO)

Notes: text stories. The third movie/novel after THE NIGHT STRANGLER happens in Hawaii. It starts in November on the 2nd. Carl seems to have worked in Chicago before Vegas and knows Miss Emily already. Carl meets Ron for the first time in CHICAGO story.

Date of publication: 2002

Time frame: after TV show’s last episode

EVE OF TERROR

Date of publication: 2005

When Franks is subsequently found murdered Kolchak joins the police investigation team to uncover the truth behind the events. Together with Myra’s gorgeous roommate, Gwen, the reporter soon uncovers a sickening governmental cover-up that dates back seventy years – which has somehow led to Myra’s transformation into a brutal killing machine…

THE EXECUTIONERS-unmade script

The Executioners’ was written by Max Hodge, although it is not known if this script was ever considered for production. It’s a great story: three murders occur in one day, the victims found strangled, beheaded and hanged. Investigating the story, Kolchak discovers that the deaths are linked to ‘The Executioners’, a Seventeenth-Century Dutch painting depicting a hangman, an axe-wielding executioner, and a poison-carrying monk. The artist was the notorious Henry Boetje, who once murdered a dozen victims, incinerated them and then mixed their ashes in with his paint; he also used their blood to clean his brushes. When Kolchak notes that the figures in the painting have moved from one night to the next, he realises that the subjects of the painting are coming to life to carry out the grisly murders…

KOLCHAK: TALES OF THE NIGHT STALKER issue 1

Date of publication: 2003

Story: Shady Places (another part of the inside front cover says there is a separate sequence called “Mr. Nightmare story”?).

Where now?: New Orleans?

Carl faces a swamp monster. A woman is attacked in an alley. Did they really need to have her cat killed, too? The thing is a shadow that eats meat (this sounds a lot like one of the better FREAKLINKS episodes). The thing struck in August 3rd, 1906. Kolchak gets infected and turning into a plant man. He has another victim in his closet in his motel room. Sleep and the AC and being out of sunlight stops the infection which is caused by a company using chemicals. I have to admit I don’t fully get this story and haven’t spent enough time to reread it or decipher it.

Kolchak arrives in New Orleans to investigate claims that Crescent City Development has violated EPA codes, disposing of hazardous chemicals used in its new line of fertilisers and pesticides and conducting illegal experiments. While following up reports of a human plant terrorizing the local citizens Kolchak is attacked by the creature, but manages to trap it in the closet of his hotel room; however, he soon becomes disturbed when his body actually begins growing leaves. Meanwhile, reports come in of a second monster roaming the streets: a living shadow that can strip the flesh from its victims’ bones in an instant…

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER: DEVIL IN THE DETAILS

Before he vanished, Chester called his wife from work at the Byte-by-Byte corporation, screaming that he was literally being eaten away. After Diana Fredersen also dissolves into nothing while on a date with Kolchak, Barry's condition goes into an impossible state of remission. Kolchak beleives that the key lies in a bottle of impossibly-small robots...

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER: PAIN MOST HUMAN

Date of publication: 2004

Tired of covering stories that involve monsters and demons, Kolchak asks Tony for a simpler, more normal assignment. His editor sends him to Camerton, N.Y., to find out just what it was that fell out of the sky a few weeks ago; although initial reports stated that the object was a crashed U.F.O., the story was subsequently retracted by the nearby army base, which then issued an announcement that one of their experimental jet planes had crashed. With the diverting assistance of local waitress Kathy Phlinsen, Carl’s investigations lead him to check out the nearby Lupoff Foundation, a factory complex that manufactures hi-tech computer chips. That night, Kolchak decides to sneak into the army base, only to discover that visitors from outer space are not the real monsters in this case…

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER: PAIN WITHOUT TEARS

Date of publication: 2004

Depressed at how his life has become nothing but a succession of frightening encounters with vampires, werewolves and energy beasts, and faced with the prospect of yet more grisly death and horror, reporter Carl Kolchak heads for a bar and proceeds to drink himself into oblivion. During his liquid breakfast, Carl encounters a young Chinese girl, Yitt Feng, who encourages him to unburden his troubles on her; after pouring out his life story to the attentive and sympathetic girl, Carl is surprised to find himself feeling much better. But this happiness is short-lived upon the arrival of two groups of men – a trio of sinister corporate ‘Men in Black’ and two Asian thugs - who try to take the Chinese girl away by force. While Kolchak’s attempts to protect Yitt only result in him being beaten up, Yitt somehow manages to evade her pursuers, and she disappears into the night. Realising that he has fallen for the girl, Kolchak turns to Tony Vincenzo for help in finding Yitt; using the newspaper’s resources he eventually tracks the girl to a nunnery. Here, Carl learns from the mother superior that Yitt is an empath, capable of healing people by absorbing their pain into herself. Reunited with Yitt, Carl encourages her to come away with him; but as they leave the convent but they are once again faced with the trio of Men in Black – and Carl is promptly shot dead…

KOLCHAK: TALES OF THE NIGHT STALKER issue 2

Date of publication: 2004

Story: KYRIE

Carl’s new story about senility being associated with being able to communicate on a higher level with house pets as a result of collective community consciousness that all living things have because of ancient man’s contact with space aliens. Tony mentions stories about plant monsters and man eating shadows. Up in Seattle, the mayor’s son was missing and a cult was suspected. In two days, Carl gets the mayor’s son home. Miss Emily appears. Ron appears. Carl has a cat named Twinkles that he has Emily watch in the office. Lorelei is the name of the girl that gave Carl a lead to the kidnapped teen(s). She seems to know about past stories (a bull man for one). Publisher Morgan Slate appears. The mayor’s political rival used a satanic cult and kidnapped the son to make it look like the Mayor’s family did it. Or was involved in a cult.

Good Morning, America is mentioned by Emily.

Carl has a dream about being back in New Orleans, attacked by the man eating shadow (last issue). Charlevoix is seen as a ghost, telling Carl he’s seen the light. Carl contemplates returning to Chicago. When the Mayor’s son Toby calls Carl to give him info on a devil, Carl realizes it is Lorelei and sets a trap for her with three Catholic priests. One is named Father Lewis, who tells Carl that the warning letter came from a guardian angel. Morgan offered Carl the job that Tony has as the Hollywood Dispatch. Carl turns it down. Carl wants Tony to let him do the final piece on the spaceships. Carl once worked Tony’s job for Tony. He claims he can’t stand Tony. He turned down the job because, “It would be hell for me.”

The editorial, WELCOME TO MY WORLD has Dave Ulanski discuss a story where “Carl retires and starts a pachyderm farm in Wyoming where he discovers a secret underground race of cucumber people bent on world domination via sending mind control waves on sunbeams to humans while they slept. In April, Carl runs into Creatures of Habbit. Ron Frenz is the special guest artist next issue.

Oddity: Carl seems to be kissing Lorelei at the bottom of one page, or almost about to and…has his hand on her throat!?

Quote: “Was that possible? Were the police thanking me and shaking my hand?”

Tony refuses to print Kolchak’s story of pensioners, cats and aliens, preferring instead to send the reporter to Seattle to investigate a cult of devil-worshippers that have supposedly kidnapped the son of the city’s mayor. Arriving in Seattle, Kolchak finds it hard to get anywhere with the story – until he meets a beautiful red-head named Lorelei, who gives him the lead he is after. Kolchak cracks the case, discovering that the mayor’s rival in the upcoming elections was responsible for the kidnapping in order to involve the mayor in a scandal over cultists. As Kolchak’s popularity with his readership soars, he finds that all his wild stories are finally believed. Kolchak’s life finally takes a turn for the better, and after seeing Lorelei again, he finds himself falling in love with her. But when Kolchak is then offered Tony’s job as editor on the paper he begins to suspect that his sudden change of fortune is just too good to be true…

KOLCHAK: TALES OF THE NIGHT STALKER issue 4

Publication date: 2004

Story: Scratch

Time Frame: Less than a month before Halloween?

Notes: Publisher is Morgan Slate and he joined for a card game.

Story: Carl vs Mary Worth, Bloody Mary. The backstory seems to have happened about 15 years ago. (no source seems sure of the Mary story but the only one that seems even close to modern times that the Kolchak stuff takes place in is 1969, which would be 15 years before 1984. So, this could be 1984.

An after-work staff-meeting at the newspaper offices quickly turns into a game of poker, and it isn’t long before the topic of Carl Kolchak’s latest story comes up. As Tony Vincenzo, Ron Updike, Mr Slate and his yes-man Eric Statton listen on, Carl recounts the mysterious details surrounding a young girl’s death during a slumber party, supposedly at the hands of a vicious spirit named Bloody Mary. But instead of facing the usual ridicule, Carl is instead talked into spending a night in the old haunted house, accompanied by his fellow card-players. Some time later, the five of them arrive at the abandoned house, but a terrified Updike panics, driving off in the car and stranding the others, just as a wild storm breaks out overhead. Inside the old house, Carl glimpses a ghostly form in a mirror, and when Statton is attacked by an unseen assailant, his badly-scratched face bleeding furiously, Kolchak realises that Bloody Mary is real, and is using the mirrors’ reflections to stalk him and his colleagues around the house. Karl and Tony collect the mirrors and store them out of the way in the basement, but rainwater leaking inside the house provides the spirit with a means of escape. As the storm continues to rage, Kolchak must find a way to trap the deadly ghost – otherwise he will not last out the night…

KOLCHAK: TALES OF THE NIGHT STALKER issue 5

Publication date: 2005

Proxmity part one

Eric James Stalton was born in the 1960s (the tombstone has the date’s last two numbers blocked by a leaf). Carl is writing for a Halloween Feature so it is around that time of year. It is confirmed it is October. Carl and Tony are working in Los Angeles. Santiago Hernandez has worked a year on the burial tomb exhibit.

Monique Marmelstein “ was just an intern back in the days of the INS. She’s a reporter now” and “another of us unlucky souls who’ve found our way to Los Angeles under the loving wing of Tony Vincenzo.”  Not sure why the need to make things in LA instead of Chicago but there you go. They work for the Hollywood Dispatch.

“Over the next couple of days…”

Carl has a nightmare with a mummy in it. Carl sees a Dr. Regis. In his narrative, Carl mentions: zombies, werewolves, aliens, plant monsters, mirror witches, minotaurs, man eating shadows, nanobots, killer viruses, gremlins, and a “love affair with the devil.” Later, Carl has hallucinations about Peremalfait. Carl has been suffering for about two weeks and thinks it could be the curse of Imjah Ra. He seems to have an apartment over a bar. Carl appears shirtless in his apartment in one frame.

A week ago, according to Geraldine Weiss, the exhibit was shipped back. A day or so later, Carl hits on her or compliments her to get her to call Santiago.

A couple of days later. Emily and Ron appear. Morgan Slate is mentioned. The story ends on a cliffhanger with Carl and Santiago at a diner seeing images of Egyptian monsters: a jackal, a mummy and a vaguely goblin like being with Egyptian garb. Santiago has one arm.

After the funeral of Eric Stalton, victim of the creature named Bloody Mary, Kolchak meets two ghost hunters named Otto and Mo Brerhahrer; when questioned, Karl refuses to comment on his ghostly encounters, and leaves the duo behind at the cemetery. Returning to work at the newspaper, Kolchak’s next assignment is to cover a story at the Los Angeles History Museum; it seems that the new Egyptian exhibit was abruptly cancelled just prior to opening after the relics on show were ordered by international law to be returned to their homeland. Kolchak meets Professor Santiao Hernadez, who is extremely aggravated to see his life’s work being taken away from him; when he encourages Kolchak to take a small souvenir of the Egyptian treasures, the reporter chooses a statuette of a cat. However, this innocuous trinket soon demonstrates strange, unearthly powers, as Kochak becomes increasingly fatigued, and begins seeing creatures from Egyptian mythology. Then, as his sanity stretches to breaking point, Karl starts to wonder if his hallucinations are in fact real…

KOLCHAK: TALES OF THE NIGHT STALKER issue 6

Publication date: 2005

Story: Proximity part two

After removing two ‘keepsakes’ from the artefacts recovered from the tomb of Imjah Ra, an ancient Egyptian vampire, Kolchak and Professor Hernadez have been plagued with terrifying visions of horrific creatures. The only way they can regain their sanity is to return the relics to Imjah Ra’s tomb; however, when they enter the ancient pyramid they come face to face with Imjah Ra’s mummy - a vicious monster that has somehow returned to life…

KOLCHAK: TALES OF THE NIGHT STALKER issue 7

Publication date: 2005

Story: The Saggath

Notes: the police friend of Carl’s returns and the homeless man named Virgil returns.

Kolchak is contacted by police officer Charlevoix, who asks for the reporter’s ‘specialised’ help in investigating a series of mysterious deaths in New Orleans. Kolchak realises that the murders have links to the plant monster and the shadow man – the Saggath – that he encountered during his previous visit to the city. He soon uncovers a link to the Crescent City Development company – and discovers that their experiments are far more sinister than Kolchak could ever have imagined…

The Framing Sequence AND Stoned:

The framing seems to be that Carl knows Tony a long time and is still working with him. Stoned is a story he recounts to Tony’s therapist. He claims he was in NY “a few years ago”. The story starts Oct 17th and 18th. Carl’s car is 23 years old. He has an old friend named Hodges as the Daily News. Clash of the Titans is one of Carl’s guilty pleasures. Carl vs a Medusa (or a Gorgon). When Tony Vincenzo seeks professional help for his stress, it emerges that Kolchak is the centre of his anxiety. The psychiatrist is curious and asks Kolchak, to pay him a visit; Kolchak agrees as a favour to his boss, and soon finds himself recounting three tales of his investigations into the world of the supernatural… While covering a nationwide talent search to find America’s new top fashion model, Kolchak meets Anya, the sister of Tanya Walker, one of the contestants. However, when Tanya’s body is found in a petrified state, he suspects that someone is deliberately sabotaging the contest. Could Tanya’s rival, the beautiful but enigmatic Athene Anetakis, be the deadly Medusa of ancient Greek legends..?

The Spike:

A framing story in a framing story? The LA stuff seems to be with Tony and Carl and on Oct 12th. Tony talks about 25 years ago. Carl goes looking for info 20 years ago and finds a NY story. Tony was a reporter but shortly left NY and became an editor. Carl tries to find out about the monster the Whisperer. Kolchak has always suspected that Tony Vincenzo knows more about the supernatural than he lets on. When Kolchak investigates the case of a woman torn to pieces in Brentwood, he finds ties to a case that Tony covered and buried twenty-five years ago – the case of a mysterious murderer known only as the ‘Whisperer’…

The Stuff I Leave Out

Kolchak doesn’t always get things right in the course of his investigations. When he goes looking for Roger Wills, a young boy who has recently disappeared, his mistaken belief that the boy has been kidnapped by a sex offender obsessed with satanic rituals nearly costs him his life…

PARTNERS IN CRIME

Date of publication: 2009

Some editions have a “brand new Kolchak” story. It’s very short and called KOLCHAK: PARTNERS IN CRIME. I’m so sorry, I’m not impressed by all these crossovers and other heroes. I want Carl and his stories, not crossovers with other franchises and heroes that I am not particularly a fan of!

KOLCHAK TALES ANNUAL

Interview With A Vampire: featuring Barnabas Collins from DARK SHADOWS.

Kolchak receives an intriguing letter from someone called Barnabas Collins, inviting him to the remote town of Collinsport to discuss a mutual “friend” – Janos Skorzeny, the vampire Kolchak staked several years ago in Las Vegas. Despite his reservations Kolchak sets off to investigate – but could Collins be a vampire as well..?

One Foot In The Grave

The Hollywood Dispatch’s publisher, Morgan Slate, sends Tony and Kolchak to Nevada to investigate a report of a missing couple, who vanished in the desert under mysterious circumstances. Kolchak soon finds himself lost in the heat-scorched wilderness – and under threat from a race of giants

KOLCHAK: THE POE CRIME is advertised in 2010.

THE PHANTOM DOUBLE SHOT: KGB NOIR  plus: KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER issue 2?

Kolchak: Dichtomy

Date of publication: 2010

Honey West notes for timeline: Honey West in a series of novels spanned the years: 1957 to 1961; 1964; she retires?; the TV show was 1965 to 1966; the two novel comeback 1971; her adventures appear to be contemporary to when they were published or TV aired.

Carl is a copyboy here AND a virgin. Jeff Rice was a copy boy in 1963. Carl meets Honey here, at a diner. They both save a young girl Consuela from a cult of Thoth run by Arden Absolute, who is using Ibis Club as a cover to kidnap virgin girls. It seems he’s done this before in other clubs he owned.

When Carl’s hair goes on fire, Honey slaps the straw hat on his head and it’s implied this is the first time he wears it. Carl mentions her legs. He is working for Chicago Independent. When Honey avoids telling him her name, Carl jokes it could be Erica, Madeline, or Hortense.

“What do you know, a lady dick, isn’t that an oxymoron?”

Story: It is Nov. 12th 1:15 pm in LA. Story ends on Nov. 13th. The experiments on Dimitri and the work of his Russian father happened in the 1980s when Dimtri was a baby. Dimtri looks to be about 25 to maybe 30? So this might be 2005? Possibly 2010?

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER: THE LOVECRAFT DAMNATION

Date of publication: 2010

Note: Illustrated text story.

Called to the office of Marvin Richards, host of the popular cable news show ‘Challenge of the Unknown’, Kolchak finds the man in a state of terror. Carl came to the aid of the newsman once before, when Richards and his team had been tricked by the immoral Doctor Randel Penes into purchasing a copy of the ancient book known as the Necronomicon; Penes used this evil tome to summon up an otherworldly demon named Nyogtha, causing the deaths of a score of people before he and the book were destroyed. Richards informs Kolchak that the studio is once again being menaced by a supernatural horror: it seems that Penes has returned, and so has the evil Necronomicon…

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER FILES issue 1

Date of Publication: 2010

Story: Untitled? Monster?: The Gargoth is a real demon monster used by movie maker director Jack Tyburn. Jack shoots the girl who leads Carl to him. Her name was Pilar Reyes. Carl burns down the studio which seems to stop the monster and the man. Carl thinks it’s been a long time that he’s seen a normal human man, a human being kill another.

Fictional Time Frame: Carl has left the Hollywood Dispatch.

Where now?: “Right here, right now” seems to be in Los Angeles.

Notes: at the end of comic book story, Kolchak thinks about this: “I liked Los Angeles, sure, but then, I’d liked Chicago, too. And Vegas. And I’d loved New York.”  He thinks it is time to move on and is looking at Miami, Florida. (At first, I thought this might be a nod to the character, Darren McGavin played in the X FILES as that character, Arthur Dales, had lived in Florida for a time).

Carl meets Tony at Papa Dino’s. Tony says Ron is on assignment up in Sacramento and Emily is visiting her sister in Boca Raton for a few weeks.

Invited to lunch by Vincenzo, Kolchak is handed a package that arrived for him at the ‘Hollywood Despatch’, sent by Stu Phipps of Bakersfield. The parcel contains news clippings and reports detailing a number of missing persons: various actors and crew associated with the B-horror movie series ‘Blood of the Gargoth’, including Stu’s younger sister, an actress named Allison Phipps, who also recently disappeared under mysterious circumstances... Deciding to investigate, Kolchak soon finds himself locking horns with Jack Tyburn, the independent producer-director responsible for the gore-splattered movie series – and quickly learns that the footage Tyburn has of the horrific beast called the Gargoth may not be down to mere special effects at all…

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER FILES issue 2

Date of publication: 2011

Story: SWAMP THINGS part 1

Fictional Month and Day: August 17th.

Notes: Carl is seeking employment in Miami, Florida. He mentions the Fourth Estate that he worked for.

The Fourth Estate is a jargon term for the portions of the United States Department of Defense that are not the military Services or Intelligence Community agencies including: the Office of Economic Adjustment. Fourth Estate entities are all organizational entities in DoD that are not in the military departments, IC agencies, or combatant commands. Archibald Leach was editor in chief of The World Bulletin, a weekly newspaper, which makes the Hollywood Dispatch look like the NY Times. Carl mentions Korea.

Erin Cho was working on the beat Carl will now get. She was working for four years on that beat. She calls Carl by the name of Kojak. Carl corrects her, “Kojak’s the bald one.”  Carl’s narration mentions a practice he would recommend: a child looking for monsters under his bed every night.

Bernie Fain, who was there when Carl drove a stake through Janos Skorzeny, appears. Carl tells Bernie he tracked down Gail and Carl tracked her down. She is in St. Louis, married and a couple of girls. He thinks she’s happy. Bernie read a book Carl wrote. Bernie apparently describes Fox Mulder, who he met before he left the Bureau. He calls him a real spooky kid who had some of Carl’s clippings on his wall. Sandra Anne Baen is an editorial intern, age 24. Carl takes his coffee black.

Possible monster: attacks have been made and Archie mentions the Florida skunk ape.

Erin loves Carl’s hat.

Quotes: “Who is this guy, Archie? He looks like a refugee from a summer stock production of the FRONT PAGE.”

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER FILES issue 3

Date of publication: 2011

Story: SWAMP THINGS part 2

Fictional Month and Day: August 18th or 19th?

Marshall Potter was on the hunt for two weeks. One of the criminal victims had a wife whose grandfather tells Carl the legend that the female Earth that the next one, either Skunk Ape or Seminole Native to spill blood would be removed from this world. He believes the Skunk Ape cannot kill people. Marshall asks about a giant mutant deer. Carl tells Marshall Potter a story about a casino that was possessed, not just the roulette table. He called an old high school buddy who was a priest now. The craps table was stubborn. Potter is killed by an amphibian man thing but skunk apes come to kill it. Apparently, it stole their nest. No bodies were found.

Quote: “There are monsters even among monsters. And some monsters…really aren’t so bad.”

The inside back cover advertises a pocket thriller called THE LOST CITY, which was changed to THE LOST WORLD.

Kolchak finally falls on his feet when he is offered the post of lead columnist at ‘The World Bulletin’, “America’s favourite weekly newspaper”, by its editor-in-chief, Archibald Leach. Readily accepting the job, Kolchak quickly finds his first story, investigating reports of a brutal swamp monster roaming the Florida everglades…

PHASES OF THE MOON

Date of publication: 2011

This is where things get confusing. This is a hard cover and inside PHASES OF THE MOON book two has that title above KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER FILES which seems to also have issue 2 on the cover. The inside front cover has KOLCHAK! And also PHASES OF THE MOON part four and Kolchak in “YOU OUTTA BE IN PICTURES.”

There is also a KOLCHAK text story called END GAME.

The inside front cover also has the title PHASES OF THE MOON-FULL MOON. Huh?

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER AND DR. MOREAU

Date of publication: 2013

After missing his flight connection back to L.A., Kolchak is forced to return by road; en route he learns of a gruesome attack in Winnetka, Illinois, at the home of Doctor Eloise Lochley, and decides to investigate. At the crime scene Carl meets an old colleague, Chief Detective Irene Lamont, who allows him to join her team as they search the house full of animal tracks and human bones picked clean. When Doctor Lochley arrives to find her home in turmoil, Kolchak questions her and learns that her son, Eli, recently disappeared; Eli was a member of ‘Animals are People Too’, an activist group that has been causing trouble in the area. As Kolchak continues to work the case, the military receive a tip off and mount a raid on the headquarters of APT; however, as they approach the group’s farmhouse, they are cut down one by one by a pack of vicious animal-human hybrids. Lamont, Kolchak and a squad of police pay Doctor Lochley a visit and find her sharing her home with another pack of hybrid creatures, descendants of a human-animal experiment by a real-life Doctor Moreau from over a century ago. Lochley reveals that the hybrids were dying out until she introduced prehistoric cells into their DNA – cells taken from ice samples that Kolchak remembers only too well, from a previous case involving killer ape-men. The doctor also tells Kolchak and Lamont that she injected Eli with the DNA too, to prevent her son dying from Alzheimer’s... Meanwhile, the other pack goes on the offensive: using weapons taken from the soldiers, they begin attacking random humans, and then devouring their prey…

“This year the holiday (Halloween) falls on a Friday.”

Carl works for the Hollywood Dispatch. Henry Hornkamp is a street source who visits Carl every Halloween. Carl’s been to the Irish Pub Harrington’s and the last time he was there it was less than a pleasant experience. An actor got shot there a few years back. Henry is the first one who didn’t want money from Carl but a story! Carl is not liked by officer Lasutta but an officer Camille sets him on a witness of a werewolf attack. Carl meets Dan. Carl accidentally activates the Skull of Sythnoxx. When returns from the Big Uneasy world, the unnatural quarter, a slightly different Earth, he finds he lost two whole days. When Kolchak returns, a vampire named Vlad comes with him but is now human. Vincenzo asks Carl where he was all weekend so Nov 1 and 2 have probably passed and it is either Nov 2 or 3.

A Message From Ron Updyke

Hard to place the time but it could be 2024. Ron refers to Carl’s disappearance and that he has come into possession of papers, tapes, out of focus photographs. Carl had been writing a memoir that Ron has.

The Funny Place

Sept 1939; Carl corrects his high school editor Any and tells him his name is Karel and not Carol. Carl writes for the Abraham Lincoln High School Gazette. His family is Polish and live in Brooklyn.

The White Lady

The Enemy Within

March 9, 1954. Carl stops demon worshippers from killing Edward R Murrow on his TV show. Carl is working for the Washington Chronicle. One of the worshippers is named Donald. The demon is named Bael.

Wandering Soul

1966 is mentioned as the last time Carl was in Hanoi, that time covering the Vietnam war. Carl recalls when he was working for the Tucson Gazette and demolished a church full of werewolf nuns by using a bulldozer. Carl tells a man, “Go stomp Tokyo,” in a Godzilla reference. Kamitra came to Hanoi to get over Carl, she knew they would never work out. She and her parents are ghosts that need to be freed. Carl believes in an afterlife.

Interview With The Night Stalker

Emeric Belasco makes Janos Skorzeny a vampire in 1934. Carl interviews Janos (alt history?).

The Nest

September 12, 1978. Rat people in Chicago (semi friendly).

The Package

May 24 to June 21, 1974. Chicago.

The Voodoo Child

Summer of 1976. Harlem. Also: September possibly 1975? A cop named Adams claims they kicked Carl out of Harlem for being a nuisance years ago. This takes place after THE ZOMBIE. Vincenzo was in NY filling in for an ailing editor.

The Primitives

July 13, 1988.

The Sin Feeder

March 3rd. March 9th. Former NASA director Warren Brown dies. Carl finds a note, “Fan of your work. Stasy out of this.”

The Last Byline

Carl’s older, looks gray haired. Feb 22: three months back in Chicago. He’s left the sunshine state (Florida). Carl’s heart most desire to see Gail Foster one more time. Leo Vlad Skorzeny bites Carl. He is Janos’ father. Carl suspected he was under some kind of curse because of how many times his photographs and cameras got confiscated or destroyed. Carl seems to talk to Miss Emily and lets her know he trusted her and always did and would have liked to have read her detective novel. Carl tells Gordy and Ron how much he appreciated them. Carl talked Tony out of letting Ron cover America’s Next Supermodel auditions but Carl explains it was because Robespierre’s ghost started decapitating the contestants. Gordy retired from the city morgue. Feb 24: Carl visits Vincenzo who says, “Why is it when my doorbell rings at this ungodly hour, yours was the first name that sprang to mind, Kolchak?”  Tony is retired and Carl hasn’t worked for him for years. An army of vampires hidden in three locations were given to Carl by Vlad. Carl tells Tony, “You are and always have been….one hell of a newsman.”  This is a play Star Trek 2’s “You are and always have been my friend.”  Carl becomes a vampire and burns the vampire lair.  Skorzeny gifted Carl a supernatural life during which he used his occult influence to ensure that Carl crossed paths with as many demons and night creatures as possible, “…not that I hadn’t run into more than my share of such things since I was a kid.”  Instead, Carl prides himself on saving others and having respect for the truth and humanity to take the leap to believe. Carl is 5;10 and 150 pounds, hazel eyes. Carl seems to burn up all the vampires, including himself but…he had a white ring around him so maybe that ring protected him?

Prose

The Oni

Quonset hut on Sato Island in the war’s Pacific Theater. Carl requested assignment to the Stars and Stripes newspaper. He was a private first class. It seems to be the very end of WW2 or possibly just before the surrender or before the A bomb drops. A giant cannibal monster toad vs Carl and Ken Matsumoto. The CO calls Carl Coal Sack. Carl and Ken were ordered to keep quiet about the monster or they would not be breathing anymore. The Japanese kid, a 19 year old soldier, who dies, first told Ken that Colonel Anderson knew about the creature and had been feeding it. The army was building a cage. Sigh. Another reason we beat Japan in WW2? Kind of tasteless.

Escape From Wisconsin

Feb 1950. Antigo, Wisconsin. Carl is a copyboy who asks for a feature at the Suburbanite Economist. Carl vs a hodag. Carl goes back to Chicago. Seems this thing was minding its own business in the woods when Carl steps on it and then it chases him and he sets a fire to kill it. Sigh.

The Devil Level

Carl is in his third week in Vietnam as a war correspondent. An angelic girl vs the devil? A fox creature?

On the Road With Carl

Tony Vincenzo’s granddaughter Lois. From Tony’s POV, an adventure as Carl, Tony, and Louise drive toward NY after THE NIGHT STRANGLER. In the end, she saves them from a hairless…bear? They let her out at a motel in what is possibly Easton. “Carl Kolchak is a  hard headed outsider who’ll do anything for the truth. Who comes on all tough and yet bleeds for mankind.”

The Black Volga

Dec 21, Peckham St. Buffalo, NY. Louise left Carl before they even got out of Washington State. Carl leaves Tony in Chicago and goes to NYc. On the way, he goes to Buffalo. Aunt Zofia was not his real aunt but a kindly neighbor who took care of Carl while his mother worked. She survived Bolsheviks, communists, and fascists. She came to Buffalo; the east side –Polonia, the heart of the St Stanislaus Parish. It is the first day of winter. Carl fakes that his name is Kojak. The devil corrupts nuns and priests to use young children’s blood.

A Case of the Mondays

May 3, 1974.

Blood Witch

Sept 13, 1978.

Up From The Underground

Dec 21, Chicago. Medical examiner Dr. Metz mentions Gordy Spangler retired.

Wolf’s Clothing

Oct 14, 1981. Tony mentions grebulons and chupacabras.  The Grebulons are a race that first appeared in the novel Mostly Harmless, when they were revealed to be monitoring the television and radio broadcasts from planet Earth, however they did not know why as the information of their mission was partly destroyed when a meteorite crashed into their ship. Due to this loss of data, nobody will ever know "for sure" where the Grebulons came from, or what it was that they wanted. Names include Talbot, Landon, and Chaney. Ends Oct 16.

L.A. Lizard (note: Carl was in LA in 1979 looking for the ghost of Sharon Tate—tasteless story beat)

1934: newspaper talks about Lizard People. Lizard people pretending to be human are in control and Carl suspects right to Washington DC. They may have “dealt with” two kids Jamie and Luis that helped Carl. They threaten Carl if he tries to publish a story about them. NOTE: this doesn’t ring true as Carl would probably have published it anyway. We do not find out what happened to the two kids/teens which is VERY annoying.

Another adventure Kolchak thinks about is chasing the Mothman in a city which he never found a decent answer to.

Another adventure he had to NOT investigate was the idea of a man controlling a horde of alligators in the sewers—the risk of infection was too great in the sewers.

Kolchak is a senior citizen and got his vaccine shot before he left Chicago and only had a sore arm and some fatigue, not much different from how he feels after a bender.

YOU CAN’T KEEP A DEAD WOMAN DOWN

Note: The feast of Damballah (the Chucky movies and TV series)  is mentioned. Zombies. Gordy the Ghoul is mentioned. The woman in this story knows Carl and Gordy. Carl helped her in the past and saved her life.

HAUNTED & HUNTED

Date of publication: 2024

From the bestselling author of The X-Files: The Official Archives comes five brand new Carl Kolchak tales full of dogged reporting and inescapable terror...Guess Who?  What would you do if you were stuck inside a haunted airport, with your dyspeptic boss, during a blackout? Kolchak uncovers a cold case where aviation history, a terrifying game, and a vengeful ghost collide with baggage-claim delays, publishing deadlines, and Fettuccine Alfredo.

Guess Who?

Vincenzo and Carl went to an east coast convention hosted by the NY Daily News. They work for the Hollywood Dispatch. Carl dreams about Det Weber.

Abduction Island

Catalina is a beautiful island off the coast of California, home to hillside vistas, scuba-loving holidaymakers, and bizarre UFO sightings. What was supposed to be an upbeat travel assignment rapidly descends into madness, where Kolchak discovers there really is no such thing as a free lunch.

 Lake of the Damned

A smashed-up cassette tape found on a Lake Tahoe beach pulls Kolchak into a story where the fate of a missing young reporter is on the line. What are the authorities ignoring? And how does local chatter about a lake monster fit into this murky, extremely fishy tale?

Notes: Gordy’s nephew is Ricky Spangler. He asks Carl to get his nephew an internship. Ricky goes to UCLA. This internship is with the Holly Dispatch. The Donner Party happened near where Carl is at the lake. The Tessie monster is mentioned and the diver Lucas Rousseau who rose from the lake dive he took and said, “The world is utterly unprepared for what is down there.”

Det Gregory Lyons might be a nod to an actor who played in some episodes of Ironside. Ricky vanishes and his body “to this day” is never found. Morbid.

Kindness Can Kill You

When driving alone, on an all-day-long road trip, it's not just planning your rest stops that requires careful consideration. Seeing a hitchhiker provokes feelings of concern but also caution. In the middle of nowhere, at the dead of night, one decision by Kolchak leads to the breakdown from hell...

October 30th: Kolchak is on the outskirts of Vegas; mentions he never saw Gail Foster again; is here to catch up with old friends from the Las Vegas Daily News that Vincenzo used to head up.

A disturbing scary story as Kolchak drives back (he works for the Hollywood Dispatch) and encounters a thing, a UFO and what appeared to be a lot of dead cows but only one seemed to die. The thing wants…blood. It starts with stories of hitchhiker stories of scary hitchhikers?

Promises, Promises

During an unexpected winter assignment in Paris, France, a jet-lagged Kolchak comes face to face with an impossible crime scene. Did a gigantic stone gargoyle from Notre Dame Cathedral come to life and commit murder outside his hotel? Is it a fiendish hoax, or something more diabolical?

Timeline: Jan 16 to Jan 19. Paris.

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER: THE RIPPER

I thought this was to be a straight novelization. It’s not. It is really a fully fledged novel sequel to the episode THE RIPPER as well as a sequel to THE NIGHT STRANGLER and somewhat to THE NIGHT STALKER TV movie.

There are connections between Janos, The Ripper, and Malcolm Richards. The ghost of Jane Plum.

Timeline: Several months ago, Janos made a brief return to life in Las Vegas. Gail Karen believes Carl’s stories and “someone who knows the truth about some of the things I’ve seen and done and actually believes it.” She was there first hand several months ago when Janos Skorzeny made a brief and puzzling return to Las Vegas and the whole story can be found in one of Carl’s earlier memoirs called the Time Stalker. That was when he first met Gail Karen.

Other ripperologists: Robert Golding. Peter Strange in a yellow bowtie who wrote a book that the Ripper was Dr. Grippen. Simeon Dietz.

Captain Matteo of THE VAMPIRE appears. A Sherlock Holmes manuscript is stolen after one of the new murders. Vincenzo wonders if Carl is allowed back in Chicago after what happened with Captain Siska. Carl has only been implicated in three or four fires in his life and the charges were all dropped.

Carl’s first encounter in Chicago was with a mummy named Nefer-weben. His “high year of strangenss” in Chicago started with that mummy and ended with a nameless prehistoric lizard. Among his other encounters he mentions a ghost of a pyromaniac.

Gordy’s son, Brad Spangler, works in the morgue in Chicago. Gordy retired two years ago. Jonas Mitzen is now a captain and he was one of the men who was a uniformed patrolman when the first Ripper was caught at a construction site and later escaped. Carl also re-meets Bernard Weldon, now Mhammed Shabazz or Mo these days. He had written some unflattering columns about Weldon aka Sweetstick while looking for Francois Edmunds who worked for Weldon as a numbers runner. Carl visits Irene Egenweiler, aka Cowles, Emily’s sister who helped him catch her neighbor the Ripper years ago. A year after the fire, they built a new house but it has gone through three owners. Irene describes the ghost of Jane Plum. Captain Warren reappears. He was forced out, probably retired and he took the Ripper’s suit and put it in a sealed bag but someone broke into his house and stole it. The Ripper killed in Milwaukee and Chicago years ago. There are at least three pay phones still in Chicago.

Carl met Jane Plum after he came to Chicago from Hawaii.

Carl’s old friend the Monk sets Carl up to get a pair of military style tasers.

The building the old INS offices were in was built in 1894 and still stood more than a century after that. So it is somewhat years after 1994 that this story takes place. Since the internet finishes off the old INS paper, it is probably more like 2004 but perhaps no later? INS was on the third floor and the building has rounded bays at the four corners. Kolchak left less than a year after his Ripper encounter (I deny that! I’d like to think Carl never left Chicago but for stories). Tony left a bit later. The INS limped on for a few more years after that and the internet finished it off. Kolchak wonders if like the Ripper home, his office building was cursed: it has been visited by one or two malevolent entities in the past.

We learn some of Janos’ past fighting in the Civil War and the Bonaparte wars, as a mercenary, he fought on both sides sometimes. We learn of the history of the Ripper Jimmy and Malcolm Richards, who meets Sherlock Holmes.

Here is the way someone researched the show’s fictional history but not sure I agree but I haven’t had time to check out the episodes themselves.

BRUISES ON THE FLESH OF GOD

Magazine title: WEIRD TALES 370: THE MONSTER ISSUE

Date in fiction given: September 3, 1983

Carl works for the Daily World News. Is sent to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Sangre de Cristo mountain mass is mentioned. Carl drives past towns named Los Luceros, Embudo, and Dixon. It has been a few years since Carl has seen FBI Special Agent Mort Rankin, a protégé of Bernie Fain. A scientist that was trapped in an alternate reality returns and declares creatures from the void between realities, from the space between realities are in our reality. There is a tear in time/space. Carl is 61. Mort warns Carl off after they escape a gov’t funded base where multi monsters attack. Mort thinks there will be a gov’t cover up. KOLCHAK ERAS-update

Date of publication: August 2025

Devour The Dead

It is January 1977. It is in Chicago between the 8th and the 13th of January 1977. Emily lives in an apartment named Shady Oaks on South Wabash. She will be staying with Mr. Cartwright because a woman died who was one of her neighbors and the snow meant they could not collect her body yet. Kolchak vs an equi, a hungry ghost.

KOLCHAK MEETS THE CLASSIC MONSTERS volume 1

Date of publication: December 2025

KOLCHAK MEETS THE WEREWOLF AND COUNT CROWLEY

September 22, 1983

Lots of references here: Kolchak mentions “Everyone thinks I’m CRACKED” which references the parody CRACKED in which Kolchak appeared in an issue or so. Crowley names herself as Laverne Defazio and her axe as Shirley (LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY). Kolchak also calls her a “regular Lenny Bruce.”

An African American cop mentions, “Kolchak, aren’t you the one who said there was a mummy on the loose at the field museum?”  The other cop thinks this is very funny for some reason.

A security officer mentions Steppenwolf.

Carl walks into Philip’s Tavern. He remeets the lady and follows her as she heads toward The Fireside Bowl. On the way, on a train, he asks her, “What the hell’s a good monster?”

Carl references CREATURE FEATURE and she references SON OF SVENGOOLIE.

She was a journalist who lost her career by a bad man who got away with being bad to her at a news show in Cleveland. Carl wants to run her story but she does not seem to want him to.

She stops the werewolf Terry (who seems ablet to talk when he is in wolf form?) using bludgeoning and chains. She tells Carl that the bad monsters have emissaries everywhere and any photographer that starts screaming from the rooftops about monsters, ends up dead. She will find a way to reverse Terry’s condition. He does not want to hurt anyone and protects his father who had dementia. She also insists or jokes that Carl will use his contacts to help Terry find support for his father. He says, “Yeah yeah.”  She tells him he will because Carl is “one of the good monsters.”

NOTE: a bit of a misleading thing here: I was expecting THE CLASSIC wolf man Larry Talbot of THE WOLF MAN or even the character Henry Hull played in WEREWOLF OF LONDON.

KOLCHAK MEETS FRANKENSTEIN

Chicago 1974. September 4, 1974.

Carl goes to see coroner Ernie Ingles about bodies having been stolen. One body had no head. Carl finds two men reviving a body to life from death. The men are going to shoot Carl dead but the Frankenstein monster arrives and kills the two men. He also kills the revived monster. The monster takes Carl’s devices. Carl feels the need to protect the legend’s secret.

KOLCHAK MEETS DRACULA

NY: Sept 9, 1978.

Carl is in NYC. Carl thinks about Studio 54 when a call comes about a murder there. He also thinks Warhol and Bette Midler. Carl also references Saturday Night Fever. “A vampire has come to take a bite out of the Big Apple,” he tells Tony.

Carl visits medical examiner Jessica James, an African American woman. She tells him this is the 6th body with bite marks. They brought in ten tonight. A man claiming to be Count Dracula arrives with two of his “brides”. Other bodies rise. Jessica seems to be killed or knocked down or slashed? Carl has the necklace from the most recent victim and seems to throw it and this stops the vampires? Huh? It was the essence of what was “his” life, of Vlad’s life. Dracula or this man seems to talk about Vlad as if Vlad is another person OR he is just naming himself? The sun comes up, the vampires all die. Is Jessica dead, too? Firemen have to put out the fire.

Carl is not sure that was Dracula for real or not. He also contemplates that Dracula has seen a number of resurrections and might return to stake a claim on NY.

Homicide detective Brandon Samms appears.

KOLCHAK MEETS KONGA

Chicago, July 23rd, 1975. Carl goes to a cryptozoologist when a man has been found stepped on inside a giant footprint. Carl sees Konga. Later, Konga grabs Tony out of his office and claims the Sears Tower and falls. Tony has his head hit a bit and doesn’t remember. A mostly comical …story.
