About Dante's Cove, The Lair and the 2000s gay genre failure
DANT'ES COVE started out great, faltered a lot in plot, focused on the lesser characters and worse actors and a lot of female divas instead of the main romance, it should have. It should have and could have been the next DARK SHADOWS, only gay, or rather gay-er but it blew it. It also started out filming on an island I believe and then moved it all to a less exotic place. It was an almost total disappointment by the time it went off into cancellation. A fourth season WAS planned and I think there was some kind of FUND ME thing designed to have "fans" send money. There was a cast plea and a brief video from members of a new cast who pleaded for money and explained a bit about the new season. The video might still be somewhere on line. I recall a very hot African actor in it. It never happened. It wasn't supported with money and never came about as far as I know. The LAIR, a supposed spin off was not a spin off and was, if anything, far, far WORSE and the guys in it were mostly NOT hot. Compared to THE LAIR (which came back on HERE TV with a new series! that's with hotter guys but a bad bunch of scripts and eps), DANTE'S COVE is miracle gold. It's sad because DANTE'S COVE seemed to be the forefront and spearhead (!) of a new kind of genre series with main leads who were gay and romantic. It wasn't gay drama of downbeat depressing AIDS, horrible gay bashing and gays being killed and killed off, or gay lovers having to hide or break up or stay in the closet. It was a gay genre show with more promised: a gay Hart To Hart was talked about (this seemed to be the Chad Allen detective show which failed to be even close to Hart to Hart) and a gay spy show or movie (some crappy movie with Shannen Dougherty and Robert Gant. Gant is good but he's not James Bond and one might not even have known that movie was about a gay spy at all. There also seemed to be talk of a gay Tarzan and/or a gay sci fi (I think Antonio Sabato played a scientist in some movie about an asteroid about to hit earth and his character was gay; though I think a straight version was also made!). All sad.
