but what good is it to love if I cannot be loved? If you will create a woman
for me, Barnabas, I will take her and go away. I will not see you and I will
not trouble you again. But if you do not create her…”
Vicki. Who?
Reprise—seems slightly
different, neck make up is better on Adam, a different delivery and more candle
smoke.
Barnabas insists Dr Lang
created Adam while looking at the teleprompter. Lang died two days before the
experiment. Barnabas tells the truth!!!?
Despite flubbing over the
word experiment, correcting that, and forgetting his lines and saying, “I
cannot do that,” after reading the teleprompter (Adam looks at it, too!), Frid
is quite good in this scene, showing sympathy and pathos and sadness over his
actions and events. Rodan is quite good, too. They have a rapport even though they
are enemies, sort of and sort of not enemies.
Barnabas sympathizes with
Adam. He also thinks Adam has reasoning but not understanding. He mentions he
will get Dr. Hoffman. We hear a loud clang.
Adam wants to love and be
loved. He will then go away with any woman that Barnabas and Julia create for
him. Willie comes up and creepy, Adam says, “Good evening, Willie.”
Someone is outside or the
camera is moving outside the window. Adam tells Willie to convince Barnabas to
help him but Willie thinks he’s crazy for this idea. Barnabas asks who put this
idea in his head. Adam lies. He gives Barnabas until
Jeff comes to Collinwood.
Outside, as he and Vicki talk, there is a LARGE shadow on the doors. Apparently,
Jeff has some kind of a job (did I miss something?). Vicki asks him how he got
out of work. Jeff called the boss and told the boss he was sick. Jeff is love
sick. Jeff has a hair out of place.
As they enter, it seems as if
the door on the left side vanishes but it is still there. FOCUS!
Camera work is a bit shoddy
and shaky.
Vicki wants to go to the Old
House to tell Barnabas about their engagement. He is her friend even though he
loves her. Jeff worries about that but Vicki tells him that Barnabas cannot
change the way she loves Jeff. Vicki plans on being there for one hour.
Jeff wants to walk her to the house but she
says she’s been through those woods hundreds of times. She also thinks that
since Cassandra and Nicholas are gone, there is no danger but just an episode
before the last one, she was telling Stokes how Blair is staying in
Collinsport.
She leaves the house at
Adam will not stay here but
does tell Barnabas he will be very sorry if he does not do what he asked.
Barnabas wonders how Adam became so cynical and who is behind it. Adam says,
“You will be very sorry.”
After he goes, Barnabas
orders Willie not to follow when Willie gets out his rifle to kill Adam. Barnabas
gets an IDK. Barnabas tells Willie about the Lang tape and what it might mean:
they have to find out more about it.
Willie tells him that young
David had that tape here a couple of weeks ago. When Barnabas asks what kind of
questions David was asking, Willie gets an IDK.
Barnabas tells Willie it is
impossible to kill Adam now because of the tape and what was on it. Willie asks
why but he says, “I don’t know, I haven’t heard it.”
Adam sees Vicki go to the Old
House. At the doors a leaf seems to come down and shake a bit, Robert Rodan
notices it. Adam watches Vicki and Barnabas from the window.
Barnabas tells Vicki that now
that Nicholas and Cassandra are gone (from Collinwood?) he will be spending
more time at Collinwood but she tells him that she might not be. She wanted him
to be the first to know she is going to married. Blue candle alert.
Vicki tells Barnabas that his
feelings are important to her and she and Jeff have not made plans yet. Now,
she says she is not sure (with an IDK) if she is making plans to leave
Collinwood.
Barnabas gives her his best
wishes and kisses her cheek.
Adam watches. The clock on
the mantle seems to say
NOTE: there are several scenes
where I feel as if someone is about to do an internal voice monologue but it
never happens in this episode. Barnabas, Jeff, Willie, Adam all have quiet
close ups in this episode and I was predicting the start of a voice over but
nothing. Was this a flub? Or mechanical error they just went with?
Adam comes upon Vicki in the
woods and covers her mouth and nose (?) so she faints. He carries her off. Her
hair almost gets stuck on a branch.
Surprising and very good episode
that furthers things even more and has Vicki’s Jeff storyline combine with
Adam’s once again. Of course, Vicki has to play the victim again. At least
she’s given something to do.
Dark Shadows bloopers to watch out for:
The first couple minutes of act 1 are kind of a mess. Barnabas and Adam both take several looks at the teleprompter, there’s studio noise, and the camera wobbles. Just after Adam says “strong feelings with which to love,” there’s a boing sound from the studio, like something struck a hollow metal container.
