THE X FILES-3-SQUEEZE
THE X
FILES-3-SQUEEZE
“This looks
like an X File.”
“Maybe you
won’t have to be Mrs. Spooky anymore.”
“But I am
officially assigned to the X Files.”
“You said
Mulder was out there. That guy’s insane.”
“In our
investigations, you may not always agree with me but at least you respect the
journey.”
“Look, Dana,
whose side are you on?”
“The victims’.”
“So what is
this, the anti Waltons?”
A killer that can fit thought the smallest of vents? That wants to eat human livers?
Tooms is the
most vile or one of the most vile villains in X FILES and TV history. It’s made
more creepy by the fact that he passes the lie detector test in one of the only
scenes where he speaks and it’s monotone. The actor is handsome but there is
also some otherworldly about him and not in a comforting way. The yellow eyes
and backstory helps to bring shivers.
I also like
that, although this is most like KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER’s vampire and
humanoid shaped supernatural monsters, unlike Carl, Mulder has a Dana that
sticks by him, despite the ridicule of others (Donal Logue of GROUNDED FOR
LIFE) and despite her own misgivings about Mulder’s more spooky theories. Like
Mulder himself says she keeps an open mind and those that do not should be made
fun of sometimes. It helps that he’s handsome and cute.
He. Eats.
Livers. Ewl.
If they miss
getting him, the next year they would have to get him is 2023. Dana seems to
start to believe the far out theory that this is the same man, though she does
not voice that. Anderson seems to play it that way.
Microfiche.
Bless.
The stalking
of Scully is truly chilling. Her colleague in the bureau is an uncooperative
jerk.
As Tooms,
Doug Hutchison is perfect. And that end scene with him looking at the food vent
(it’s locked but will that stop him? As Mulder says security might not be
enough for all of us, which is a scary notion) is truly chilling and his slow
burn smile is also.
A terrific
episode and possibly the first serial killer episode and one that resembles THE
NIGHT STALKER movies and TV show episodes.
David and
Gillian are once again excellent. The locations are suitably scary and Tooms
stealing of Dana’s locket is really horrific as he’s right above them and he
snagged her.
The moody and fast paced music, slow when needed, is perfect, too and adds to the overall tone and feel of this show and this episode in particular.
Wow. Again,
I’m not surprised this series took off. What a great trio of first episodes.
Again, you can find a lot about this episode elsewhere so I will not go into its details but it's worth exploring and watching. Tooms returns in another episode and the actor plays a significant role in MILLENNIUM, too. I think something controversial happens in his real life and I don't hear too much about him so maybe his career is over?
